Assaults on uniformed officers in New York City have surged dramatically over the past six years, according to recently released NYPD data.

Reports show a 63 percent increase in attacks on officers compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The figures, first published by the New York Post, reveal that there have been 970 reported assaults on uniformed NYPD officers as of this year — up from 595 during the same period in 2019.

The total number of assaults against city law enforcement has risen 57 percent compared to the same span in 2021, and 4 percent higher than this point in 2023.

The rise in violence against police has included a number of high-profile incidents.

In 2020, a vehicle drove through a police line in Brooklyn, injuring at least one officer who suffered a leg injury, according to Breitbart News.

In August 2024, a female NYPD officer was bloodied during an altercation with a repeat offender who was out on probation.

The incident raised concerns about public safety and the release of violent offenders under relaxed bail and probation policies.

Another case drew national attention in early 2024, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a Venezuelan national in connection to an attack on NYPD officers in Times Square.

The man had entered the country illegally and was released under the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies before being convicted of the assault.

In a separate event, members of the Tren de Aragua — a violent gang originating in South America — were involved in a street brawl with NYPD officers in Times Square after allegedly attempting to rob two individuals.

“As a matter of fact, in every sanctuary city, we are going to triple the workforce. We are going to flood the zone with officers.”

In the Bronx, law enforcement officials recently identified a suspect connected to the assault and robbery of an off-duty NYPD officer, who was reportedly held at knifepoint and beaten during the attack.

Retired NYPD sergeant Joseph Giacalone, who now teaches at Penn State University-Lehigh Valley, cited New York’s criminal justice policies as a key factor behind the uptick in violence.

“You have DAs like Alvin Bragg who don’t even want to prosecute felony assaults against cops. So where’s the deterrence? You have a criminal justice system that’s a revolving door and people are getting arrested 40, 50, 60 times,” he said.

“The cops are dealing with people out on the streets who are really bad.”

Another former officer told the Post that recent police training protocols may be contributing to the trend.

“It’s always deescalate and never take control, which often emboldens [a] perp and gives them an advantage,” the former officer said.

The rising number of assaults comes amid broader national conversations about law enforcement and public safety.

During National Police Week in May, President Donald Trump paid tribute to police officers who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding American communities.

He also addressed concerns over rising crime rates and criticized Joe Biden’s approach to public safety.

“A nation in chaos ceases to be a citadel of liberty,” Trump said, as reported by Breitbart News on May 13.

“Tragically, the previous administration allowed lawlessness to permeate our country, making it harder for our law enforcement officers to do their jobs. Their reckless, soft-on-crime policies emboldened criminals and thugs; wreaked havoc on the sanctity of our homes, businesses, and public spaces; instilled fear; and jeopardized public trust.”

The NYPD has not issued an official statement in response to the latest data.
