Seventeen individuals are facing criminal charges after authorities say they dismantled a large-scale drug trafficking operation that was distributing hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine each month across Northern California, as reported by The New York Post.

Prosecutors in Placer County announced Thursday that the suspects have been charged with multiple offenses, including conspiracy and transporting methamphetamine for sale.

The charges follow an eight-month undercover investigation known as “Operation Meltdown,” which authorities say uncovered an extensive network centered in Sacramento and supplying narcotics in Placer County.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began in July 2025 when an undercover detective purchased several pounds of methamphetamine from a suspected dealer in North Auburn.

What initially appeared to be an isolated transaction quickly expanded as investigators identified what they described as a broader trafficking pipeline operating throughout the region.

Authorities allege the organization was distributing approximately 500 pounds of methamphetamine each month across Sacramento and Placer counties, making it a significant source of illegal drugs in Northern California.

On March 12, law enforcement agencies carried out a coordinated enforcement operation across the region. Nearly two dozen agencies participated in raids targeting 25 homes and other locations tied to the suspected network.

The coordinated action resulted in multiple arrests, with suspects taken into custody and booked into the Placer County Jail.

During the operation, investigators reported seizing 65 pounds of methamphetamine, more than 7 kilograms of cocaine, and approximately half a pound of MDMA.

Authorities also recovered 26 firearms and more than $100,000 in cash. In addition, investigators said they discovered what they described as a DMT lab.

Sheriff’s officials stated that some individuals connected to the alleged trafficking network had ties to a Mexican drug trafficking organization, as well as Sacramento-area drug and gun trafficking gangs.

The investigation highlighted what authorities described as a coordinated distribution system that moved narcotics across county lines.

All 17 defendants have appeared in court and entered not guilty pleas, according to prosecutors. The case is expected to proceed through the court system as authorities continue to pursue charges tied to the alleged operation.

The arrests and seizures mark the culmination of the months-long probe, which officials say targeted a network responsible for moving significant quantities of illegal drugs throughout the region.
