Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon criticized Fox News host and former Congressman Trey Gowdy for his outspoken opposition to President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as Attorney General.
Bannon’s remarks came during a segment of his War Room podcast on Saturday morning, where he labeled Gowdy a “traitor” and accused him of failing to defend Trump allies during critical moments in recent political history.
Gowdy, a former Republican congressman from South Carolina who rose to prominence during the Benghazi hearings, has been a Fox News host since retiring from Congress.

Recently, he expressed skepticism about Gaetz’s ability to secure Senate confirmation for the Attorney General role.
“The more you get to know Pete Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard, the more you’re gonna like her. The more you get to know Matt Gaetz, the less you’re gonna like him,” Gowdy said. “I’m gonna be really surprised if he can get confirmed.”
Bannon, a staunch ally of Trump, did not hold back in his response, first directing his ire at Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch, suggesting the network is out of touch with Trump’s vision for his administration. “Because these cabinet secretaries are going to be the cabinet secretaries. And Matt Gaetz, as Attorney General, and the team they put around that’s been announced is an amazing team already. And he will be the quarterback. So it’s going to happen,” Bannon declared.
Turning to Gowdy, Bannon accused the former congressman of undermining Trump and his allies during key investigations.
He specifically referenced Gowdy’s handling of allegations made by former House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, who repeatedly claimed to have seen direct evidence of Russian collusion with the Trump campaign—a claim that has since been debunked.
“And the worst was Trey Gowdy. He was trying to dig up stuff on Trump. Trey Gowdy is a traitor, he’s a horrible person,” Bannon said. “Perfect person to be over the Murdoch’s running dog.”
Bannon also criticized Gowdy’s departure from Congress, questioning his decision to leave while being touted as a rising star in the conservative movement. “Trey Gowdy, you left the House like in the middle of the night. As a rising quote-unquote star, you left like in the middle of the night,” Bannon remarked.
He went on to speculate about Gowdy’s career trajectory following his exit from Congress, questioning why he did not pursue a high-profile legal role or a judgeship. “But you didn’t take being a judge, which would be an obvious choice. You didn’t check being a U.S. attorney or attorney for the government, which would have been an obvious choice. You didn’t take going for a big law firm and getting a payday, right? You kind of put your shingle up, kind of wandered around. Why would anybody do that?”

The debate over Gaetz’s nomination has sparked sharp divides within the Republican Party and conservative circles.
While critics like Gowdy have questioned Gaetz’s qualifications and confirmation prospects, Trump allies like Bannon have rallied behind the nomination, framing it as part of Trump’s effort to reshape the Department of Justice and hold federal agencies accountable.
