The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is facing allegations of misleading viewers after its program “Panorama” broadcast an edited version of President Donald Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech, according to a report published Monday by The Telegraph.

The report cited a 19-page dossier by Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee, which detailed alleged bias in the state-funded broadcaster’s coverage of multiple political and social issues.

Prescott’s dossier reportedly claims that “Panorama” presented a distorted version of Trump’s remarks delivered near the White House, editing the footage to imply he encouraged violence at the Capitol.

“The spliced together version of Trump’s comments aired by Panorama made it seem that he said: ‘We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be with you and we fight. We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not gonna have a country anymore,’” the document stated.

The dossier asserts that the BBC combined clips taken nearly an hour apart to create a continuous statement that Trump never actually made.

“Senior officials at the BBC have reportedly not responded to the concerns raised in the dossier,” The Telegraph reported, while unnamed managers “refused to admit that a breach of standards occurred.”

In a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation, a BBC spokesperson said, “While we don’t comment on leaked documents, when the BBC receives feedback it takes it seriously and considers it carefully.

Michael Prescott is a former adviser to a board committee where differing views and opinions of our coverage are routinely discussed and debated.”

According to the official transcript of Trump’s remarks published by NPR, the President’s actual comments were far less inflammatory than those aired by the BBC.

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” Trump said during his address.

The Telegraph’s associate editor Gordon Rayner analyzed the BBC segment in a video posted to the newspaper’s YouTube channel. Holding a copy of the dossier, Rayner explained that the first portion of Trump’s remarks used by the BBC occurred at 12:16 p.m. Eastern time, while the second portion—joined to it in the broadcast—came from 1:10 p.m.

“Trump didn’t, in fact, say this at all,” Rayner said.

“The BBC spliced together two clips that took place 54 minutes apart.”

Rayner later added, “It wasn’t until nearly an hour later that he then said the second part of the BBC’s version.”

The demonstration showed the precise timing of the edits used in the broadcast, suggesting deliberate manipulation.

White House deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson criticized the BBC’s handling of the footage, calling it part of a broader problem in legacy media.

“Trust in the media is at an all-time low because of deceptive editing, misleading reporting, and outright lies,” Jackson told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“This is yet another example, of many, highlighting why countless Americans turn to alternative media sources to get their news.”

The controversy comes as President Trump continues to pursue and win settlements over what he has described as defamatory or misleading media coverage.

In December 2024, ABC reached a $15 million settlement with the President after he sued the network and “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos for falsely stating that Trump had been found “liable for rape” during a March 10, 2024, interview with Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina.

Separately, Paramount Global announced in July 2024 that it had settled a $10 billion lawsuit filed by Trump over the editing of an October 2024 “60 Minutes” interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris during the presidential campaign.

The BBC has also faced criticism for bias in its Arabic-language coverage of Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Hamas that killed more than 1,200 people in Israel.

The network has further been accused of “censorship” in its reporting on transgender issues.

According to The Telegraph, additional excerpts from Prescott’s dossier on BBC editorial practices are expected to be released in future reports.
