I watched a video of Bernie Sanders and AOC having what was described as a “meltdown” over Kaitlin Collins’s question regarding AOC’s intentions regarding a potential Senate bid in New York.
I thought “meltdown” was not the appropriate descriptor, mainly because that is how New York socialists answer every question that annoys them. Emote, distract, yell, make ridiculous statements–that is a day ending in “y” for such people. I grew up around New York socialists, at least when I visited my grandparents every summer, and it almost became charming after a while.
You know they aren’t going to answer. They know it. They blow off steam, feel good about themselves, and you gnosh some more.

The claim that “nobody cares” whether AOC is going to primary Chuck Schumer is, of course, absurd on its face. The entire government shutdown fiasco is about Schumer being terrified of a left-wing challenge to his seat.
Chuck, after all, has only spent 44 of his 74 years in Washington, and everybody knows that any serious politician doesn’t leave before he dies in office in his 80s or 90s. If he loses his seat to AOC, he will die in shame.
No, what struck me was Bernie’s rather charming rant about how rich the United States is, and how shameful it is that despite this fact we have not adopted the socialist solutions that other countries have:
We’re living in the richest country in the history of the world. Right. Alright, you tell me why we’re the only nation not to guarantee healthcare to all people.
The only nation, not to guarantee paid family and medical leave. Why We have a $7 25 cents an hour minimum wage.
Bernie sees these as contradictions because Bernie is a socialist. Socialists wonder why the wealthiest country on earth is one of the least socialist in the developed world.
I don’t wonder that at all, Bernie. In fact, most of the crises we have in the US are in sectors of the economy where the government is most involved. Housing? My God, housing policies are grossly distorted by government policies. Regulations, lending requirements, zoning, energy standards, labor and licensing requirements. Zoning. Transportation policies.
Health care? We don’t have universal health care, but health care is one of the most distorted areas of the economy, and the current crisis is a result of Obamacare, just as previous crises have been driven by artificially restricting providers, Medicare and Medicaid policies, insurance regulations, and certificates of need that keep the number of hospitals and medical facilities artificially restricted.
Higher ed? Where to start? Whatever the government touches, it increases cost and reduces quality!
But, overall, the US economy is LESS regulated than most developed countries, and that explains why we are the wealthiest country in human history. It’s not DESPITE our lack of socialism, but BECAUSE socialist policies are more restricted here than in other developed countries, although we are rapidly losing that advantage due to people like Bernie Sanders and AOC.
Socialist policies are ripping the European economy apart.
In 2008, the EU and US economies were about the same size, although the GDP per capita of the US was still substantially larger because the US has a smaller population. Today, the US economy is dramatically larger, and the gap is growing.
In recent years, the U.S. economy has grown at a faster rate than the European Union’s, which is currently made up of 27 member states.
According to the World Bank, in the period 2008-2023, EU GDP grew by 13.5% (from $16.37 trillion to $18.59 trillion) while U.S. GDP rose by 87% (from $14.77 to $27.72 trillion). The UK’s GDP increased by 15.4%. In 2023, EU GDP was 67% of U.S. GDP — down from 110% in 2008.
Accounting for population, EU GDP per capita as a percentage of U.S. GDP per capita fell from 76.5% in 2008 to 50% in 2023.
The major factor for this widening economic gap is a discrepancy in productivity, according to the Draghi report on EU competitiveness. The report notes that, out of the largest fifty technology firms in the world, only four are in Europe.
Bernie looks at this and wonders, “Why can’t the US be more like Europe?” I look at these facts and wonder, how can the US become LESS like Europe? Let’s root out the socialist policies we DO have and increase the gap even further!
Obviously, we can afford and should have some level of social insurance–nobody should starve here or die in the streets (Gavin Newsom seems fine with people dying in the streets, as long as we spend hundreds of thousands to help them)–but using socialist policies is not the solution to preventing that.
Unless you want to impoverish the US, best to avoid the policies that Bernie so admires.
