President Joe Biden shared that his first great grandchild was born Wednesday while being briefed on the wildfires raging just miles from him in Los Angeles, California.
Biden touched down Monday in L.A. as he was scheduled to travel to the Coachella Valley and designate two new national monuments. The president’s plans were cancelled due to intensifying winds and wildfires that broke out in the area. The 82-year-old stayed in town and was briefed by officials at Santa Monica Fire Station where he revealed at the end of the somber conference that his granddaughter, Naomi Biden, had given birth. “And the president happened to be in the region, in town. It’s impossible to express the level of appreciation and cooperation we received at the White House and from this administration,” Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom said following Biden’s initial remarks on the wildfires.
“So on behalf on all of us, Mr. President, thank you for being here, not just today — thank you for being here since the minute of this incident,” Newsom added.
“It is astounding what is happening,” Biden said, before noting that he was once under the impression his son’s home was burning to the ground as a result of the fires.
“But the good news is, I am a great-grandfather as of today,” the president continued. “I have a new granddaughter. A 10 pound baby girl … baby boy. So I will remember this day.”
After briefing attendees congratulated the president, White House staff can be heard ushering the press out before the 82-year-old could answer any questions.
The president revealed in an interview with USA Today, which was published Wednesday, that Naomi Biden had a c-section scheduled. Before Biden’s plans for Tuesday were cancelled, he was scheduled to return Wednesday afternoon to the White House.
Biden and the First Lady stopped by Cedars Sinai Hospital on Wednesday morning, where Hunter Biden, the father of Naomi Biden, his wife Melissa and their Beau were also seen entering.
The president corrected himself when speaking about the gender of Naomi’s baby and the First Lady posted that the child is a boy in an Instagram post.

“We’re doing anything and everything and as long as it takes to contain these fires … to make sure you get back to normal. It’s going to be a hell of a long way. It’s going to take time,” the president began his remarks after officials finished briefing him on the wildfires.
