In a moment that left many shaking their heads, President Joe Biden took the podium Monday to tout his withdrawal from Afghanistan, a move widely criticized as disastrous.
Speaking at the State Department, Biden called himself “the first president in decades who’s not leaving a war in Afghanistan to his successor,” doubling down on his controversial decision to pull U.S. forces from the war-torn region, as reported by The New York Post.
Ignoring the warnings of top military advisors like Gen. Mark Milley, Biden justified the withdrawal, claiming that the “primary objective” of eliminating Al Qaeda in Afghanistan had been achieved.

He argued that ongoing threats now originate elsewhere and dismissed the need for a continued American military presence.
“In my view, it was time to end the war and bring our troops home, and we did.”
However, the president’s self-congratulation glossed over the tragic aftermath of his choice. On August 15, 2021, the Taliban reclaimed control of Afghanistan, erasing 20 years of progress almost overnight.
Women are now silenced, humanitarian aid has been diverted, and the region has returned to a hotbed for oppression and extremism.
The abrupt withdrawal also resulted in the loss of 13 brave U.S. service members during a chaotic suicide bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport.

While Biden briefly mentioned “those brave service members whose lives were lost,” he avoided discussing the consequences of his decision.
Instead, he touted the economic benefits of ending America’s involvement, claiming the U.S. could now redirect its focus toward challenges like China and Russia.
“Ending the war was the right thing to do, and I believe history will reflect that,” Biden stated confidently.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, wasn’t buying it. He lambasted Biden’s framing of the withdrawal as a success, calling it a “bold-faced lie.”
According to McCaul, the withdrawal “telegraphed U.S. weakness” and unleashed chaos worldwide. He pointed to the 2024 committee report, which found Biden dismissed warnings from U.S. allies, Afghan officials, and even his own advisors to stick to Trump-era withdrawal agreements.

House Republican Caucus Chair Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) joined the criticism.
“America is WEAKER — not stronger because of Joe Biden.”
“America is MOCKED — not feared,” she wrote, adding: “In seven days, President Trump will reverse Biden’s destruction and make America respected again.”
While Biden basks in his version of history, many Americans remember the tragedy, chaos, and betrayal that accompanied his decision. For veterans, military families, and citizens who value national security, Biden’s speech was less a victory lap and more an unwelcome reminder of what was lost.
