Big Brother II: VPNs on the Chopping Block in UK?

In my 2:00 piece, I wrote about Australia’s soon-to-be-implemented requirement to upload a Digital ID in order to conduct an internet search. 

Every search query you make will be tied to your ID, ready for the government to conveniently track you as you move around the internet.

The UK is still pushing its propaganda regarding Digital ID, and hasn’t quite gotten the policy over the finish line. But fear not, until they do, they have other ways to go all Chinese Communist Party social credit system on you.

Britons are assured that there are no specific plans to ban VPNs, but that “everything is on the table.”

VPNs could be banned as part of a crackdown on internet freedoms following the Online Safety Act’s online age gates. Intended to block children from accessing adult content, the OSA has already seen services such as games console Xbox and chat service Discord require users to prove their age to continue using their accounts, while image hosting service Imgur has blocked access to UK users following the legislation.

However, those trying to access websites without proving their age have been able to do so using VPNs – Virtual Private Networks – which spoof location to outside the UK. Today a tech minister said that ‘nothing is off the table’ in terms of restricting access to the internet with a view to ‘keeping children safe’ but that there were not currently specific plans to outlaw VPNs.

It’s always for the children, isn’t it?

For those who want to argue that “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear,” you are wrong. As you have already seen, it is common now for Western governments to track people by religion or ideology and work to suppress ideas that the powers that be don’t approve of. In the UK, you can go to jail for a tweet and get sentences longer than those of rapists. Criticizing Islamism, or unchecked immigration, or even quoting certain passages of the Bible can get you in trouble.

Even “non-crime hate incidents,” which means saying the wrong thing, will get you on a list. Thirty people a day are getting arrested for speech crimes in the UK. 

In Germany, they do dawn raids on people for thinking the wrong thing, and are quite proud of doing so. And, as you can see, the “journalist” is pretty damn happy about it as well.

VPNs are hardly a cure-all, but they do place a barrier between you and the speech (and thought) police. 

I don’t deny that there are legitimate concerns about children being exposed to inappropriate pornographic content, and I support age verification for porn sites. The fact that age verification schemes are imperfect and can be gotten around is not an argument for eliminating all avenues for maintaining privacy. 

Laws can always be circumvented. Imagine arguing that we should have no Fourth Amendment rights because they impede the police’s ability to catch criminals. 

“Hey, the police should be encouraged to search every house to discover criminals” is a pretty scary argument. And this is the same principle. 

Western governments are busy building their own social credit systems modeled on China’s. That is not a paranoid fever dream; it is just a fact. 

“It couldn’t happen here” is a foolish argument. It can, and it will unless people fight back.
