Former President Bill Clinton has endorsed Andrew Cuomo in the final days before Tuesday’s Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, as reported by Fox News.

The endorsement gives Cuomo, a former three-term governor and U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Clinton, a boost as progressive support coalesces around challenger Zohran Mamdani.

Cuomo, who resigned from the governor’s office in 2021 amid multiple scandals, is attempting a political comeback.

His campaign has emphasized his executive experience managing crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and tensions with the Trump administration, while downplaying the controversies that led to his resignation.

“As President, I chose Andrew to be my Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and he never let me down—but more importantly, he didn’t let the nation down,” Clinton said in a statement.

“New York City is facing major challenges. There is a desperate need for affordable housing, homelessness is at a crisis level, and public safety must be restored.”

Clinton added, “New Yorkers should choose competence for a change. I am confident Andrew can turn New York around.”

I am honored to be endorsed by President @BillClinton — a personal mentor, friend and hero. His belief that change is not only possible but is the foundational work of government inspires me in every action I take.

Cuomo’s endorsement from Clinton follows a recent nod from another former New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg. Despite these high-profile endorsements, Cuomo’s once-commanding lead in the crowded 11-candidate primary has narrowed.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and state assemblyman from Queens, has gained ground in recent polling.

Mamdani has received the backing of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, who have worked to consolidate the progressive vote behind him. Cuomo’s campaign has responded by highlighting Mamdani’s lack of executive experience.

One Cuomo campaign ad calls Mamdani “a 33-year-old dangerously inexperienced legislator who’s passed just three bills with a staff you can fit inside a New York elevator.”

Meanwhile, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who sits in third place in the polls, was recently arrested by Department of Homeland Security agents after allegedly assaulting a federal officer during an altercation at an immigration court.

More than 384,000 Democrats voted early ahead of the primary, which uses ranked-choice voting. In Democrat-heavy New York City, the winner of the Democratic primary is typically favored in the general election. However, the general election may be less predictable this year.

Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is running for re-election as an Independent after dropping out of the Democratic primary amid plummeting approval ratings and a federal indictment.

Adams was indicted last year on five counts of bribery and fraud in what prosecutors described as a “long-running” scheme.

The charges were dismissed earlier this year after he made overtures to President Donald Trump and pledged cooperation with the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
