Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher is pushing back against longtime friend Larry David after the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star published a satirical op-ed in The New York Times comparing Maher’s dinner with President Donald Trump to a hypothetical meeting with Adolf Hitler in 1939, as reported by Fox News.

Maher addressed the controversy during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored Thursday night, responding to David’s op-ed titled My Dinner with Adolf, which did not mention Maher by name but clearly mocked his recent visit with Trump.

“I mean, this wasn’t, you know, my favorite moment of our friendship,” Maher said of David’s piece. “But I think the minute you play the Hitler card, you’ve lost the argument.”

Maher, who has been a vocal critic of Trump over the years, defended his decision to meet with the former president and report honestly on his behavior during the encounter.

“Nobody has been harder about and on and more prescient, I must say, about Donald Trump than me,” Maher said. “I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is.”

Maher added that using Nazi comparisons was not only inflammatory, but also deeply disrespectful to the memory of Holocaust victims.

“To use the Hitler thing… it’s kind of insulting to 6 million dead Jews. Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place. He is the GOAT of evil, and we’re just going to have to, I think, leave it like that.”

David’s op-ed, which described a fictional radio host reluctantly attending a dinner with Hitler, mocked the notion of engaging respectfully with someone labeled a monster.

“Here I was, prepared to meet Hitler… but this private Hitler was a completely different animal,” David wrote. “And oddly enough, this one seemed more authentic.”

The piece ends with the narrator giving Hitler a Nazi salute and walking away, a clear satirical jab at what David perceives as dangerous normalization.

Though the two have not spoken since the op-ed’s publication, Maher said he remains open to dialogue. “If I could talk to Trump, I could talk to Larry David, too,” he told Morgan. “I can take a shot, and I also can absolutely take it when people disagree with me.”

Maher reiterated that while others may dislike his views, his comments on Trump’s demeanor during the meeting were truthful. “You can hate me for it, but I’m not a liar. Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher said during a recent monologue.

David’s representatives did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
