Rep. Jasmine Crockett said she “followed all protocols” in hiring a security guard who was later identified as a fugitive with a criminal history and under federal investigation before being fatally shot during a standoff with Dallas SWAT, as reported by The New York Post.

Crockett (D-Texas) confirmed in a statement released Monday that her security guard, Diamon-Mazairre Robinson, was killed by police in Dallas on Wednesday night.

She said she knew Robinson under the alias “Mike King” and attributed his ability to pass vetting procedures to what she described as gaps in the system.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“Our team followed all protocols outlined by the House to contract additional security,” Crockett wrote in a statement posted to X.

“The fact that this individual was able to somehow circumvent the vetting process for something as sensitive as security for a member of Congress highlights the loopholes and shortcomings in many of our systems,” Crockett wrote.

Crockett stated that her team had no knowledge that Robinson, 39, was operating under an alias.

She said she believed he had provided security services for “additional local entities” and worked in coordination with Capitol Police. Robinson had been part of her security detail, including during her Senate campaign.

“With that being said, we are praying for the friends and family of the man we knew as Mike King,” Crockett said, noting he had worked in and around her team “for years.”

According to reports, Robinson used multiple aliases to gain access to law enforcement circles in Texas. He allegedly claimed to be a police officer and secured work providing security services.

He is also believed to have operated a website called “Off Duty Police Services,” which connected officers with off-duty work opportunities.

The Dallas Police fugitive unit had been tracking Robinson on Wednesday while he was driving a GMC Yukon with stolen government license plates, according to CBS News Texas.

Authorities said Robinson was under investigation for impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The pursuit led officers to a parking garage connected to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where Robinson barricaded himself inside a vehicle.

Police deployed tear gas in an attempt to force him out. When Robinson exited the vehicle, he pointed a gun at officers, prompting them to open fire. He was fatally shot at the scene.

Authorities later recovered 11 weapons from Robinson, including a stolen firearm that he was reportedly holding at the time he was shot.

“What we’re learning about his past doesn’t fit the person we came to know as Mike King,” Crockett wrote.

“His death evokes a range of emotions. Our hearts grieve the loss of someone we knew and the lost good that could have come from his redemption.”

Crockett added that her office had no indication Robinson had misrepresented himself.

“There was never any reason to suspect that he wasn’t who he held himself out to be. He never endangered our team, worked diligently, coordinated with local law enforcement, and maintained positive relationships throughout the community,” she said.

Court records reviewed by CBS News Texas show Robinson had multiple arrests between 2009 and 2012, including seven theft-related cases.

He pleaded guilty to both felony and misdemeanor charges and received penalties including fines under $2,500 and probation. His longest sentence was 10 years of probation.

“We are saddened and shocked by some of the concerning revelations,” Crockett’s statement added.

“As a former public defender, the Congresswoman has always believed that people have an immense capacity for redemption and deserve second chances.”

As a former public defender, I’ve always believed people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done. I believe in redemption. The man we knew showed up with respect, care, and commitment to protecting others.
