BREAKING: House Passes Funding Bill, 222-209

In the end, it wasn’t particularly close. Six Democrats crossed the aisle to support the bipartisan Senate funding bill that will re-open the federal government until at least January 30:

The 222-to-209 vote came on Day 43 of the shutdown and days after eight senators in the Democratic caucus broke their own party’s blockade and joined Republicans in allowing the spending measure to move forward, prompting a bitter backlash in their ranks. It was the first time the House had held a vote in nearly two months, as it took an extended recess during the shutdown.

Six Democrats joined Republicans in approving the bill. Only two Republicans voted against it, Representatives Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Greg Steube of Florida. …

In the House, the six Democrats who voted to reopen the government were Representatives Adam Gray of California; Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington; Jared Golden of Maine; Henry Cuellar of Texas; Tom Suozzi of New York; and Don Davis of North Carolina. All represent swing districts.

The outcome was all but guaranteed after the vote on the rule. That passed with 219 votes, signaling the eventual approval of the new funding package. House Democrats whipped against it, but the aforementioned swing-state Democrats decided to go with the flow.

That’s not to say that the evening lacked drama. Earlier in the process, a House Democrat from Washington demanded disciplinary action be taken against … another House Democrat:

What’s wild about this move is that the Dems were trying to be completely unified tonight. (Mostly) unified against the gov’t funding bill. They got Grijalva in. They got the Epstein discharge petition to 218.

Glueskamp Perez went on to vote in favor of the funding bill. Maybe she figured that she may as well burn all her bridges at once. For those wondering, her WA-03 district has a Cook index of R+2. Perhaps Glueskamp Perez is planning more than one walk across the aisle?

Make no mistake, though. House Democrats are furious about the outcome of this shutdown:

They’re mad at the Senate Democrats who cut them out of negotiations and cut the deal to reopen the government after a record 43-day shutdown. They’re mad at Speaker Mike Johnson for keeping the House out of session all that time for what they’re calling a “seven-week paid vacation.” And they’re mad that, after all that, there’s still no clear path forward on meeting their key demand — an extension of health insurance subsidies that expire next month.

Their fury was evident across the Capitol in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday’s decisive vote reopening the government as they took stock of a long, bitter fight that ended without a clear win and left many spoiling for fights and in little mood to compromise with Republicans.

They aren’t the only angry people on Capitol Hill:

Republicans displayed some anger of their own Wednesday. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) used his floor time to decry Democrats for their “extremist” positions and sparking the record shutdown. “You should all be ashamed of yourselves for inflicting this pain on the American people … not paying our troops, our federal employees, our air traffic controllers,” he shouted. “It’s a disgrace, and you should all hang your heads in shame.”

Indeed.

The shutdown will be over tonight. Donald Trump has already announced a signing event that will take within the hour, once the bill is engrossed and transmitted to the White House. This long, stupid national annoyance is finally over. For now. See you on January 30, when we’ll see if anyone learned anything from it.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is still here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
