Rep. Tim Burchett said he does not expect Congress to take meaningful action against former President Bill Clinton, arguing that a lack of political will and Justice Department inaction will prevent accountability before the midterm elections.
Burchett made the remarks during an exchange with Benny Johnson, who asked about the status of potential congressional action involving Bill and Hillary Clinton amid renewed public scrutiny.
“It’s Bill Clinton in the hot tub, right? It’s Bill Clinton on the plane. It’s all these now, we have all the photos, the young women in his lap with his arms around them on the plane. So talk to us, Congressman like, what’s going to happen with Bill and Hillary?” Johnson asked.

Burchett responded bluntly, saying he believes nothing will happen.
“I’d say probably nothing, because we don’t have the guts to go after him,” Burchett said.
“Chairman Comer is doing a good job, but he’s very limited. I think in his ability to do that, he can we can subpoena, allegedly, we can bring them in, but I don’t see them doing it.”
Burchett said he believes Clinton is attempting to avoid public testimony by negotiating alternative arrangements.

“I think Clinton’s trying to negotiate some thing up in New York where it’s a one on one or some garbage,” he said.
The Tennessee congressman argued that Congress should compel Clinton to testify publicly and forcefully.
“No, let’s put him in. Bring him in chains, bring him into Congress, answer some dadgum questions. That’s what’s got to happen,” Burchett said.
“The American public is demanding that, and I think Chairman Comer is too.”
Burchett said institutional resistance and what he described as entrenched protection within the Justice Department remain major obstacles.
“But the problem you’ve got, of course, is the Justice Department that that onion is so thick and it’s very disgusting to me, and Clinton’s just thumbing his nose,” he said.
Burchett also criticized Clinton for publicly attacking President Donald Trump, saying the former president should refrain from commenting on moral issues.
“He put out. He attacked the president the other day on some moral ground,” Burchett said.
“And I said, and I tweeted out, I said, you bombed an aspirin factory to keep your name out of the front page of the paper one time, I said, think you ought to sit this one out.”
Burchett claimed Clinton avoids accountability and public scrutiny.
“And of course, he has his comments turned off,” Burchett said.
“He, you know, I’m sure he, he hides behind Hillary’s skirt at every indicate, at every opportunity.”
Burchett said fear surrounding Clinton’s political influence has prevented action, despite what he believes is widespread public demand for accountability.
“I’m not afraid of him, but the problem is a lot of people are and he’s so deep,” he said.
According to Burchett, real consequences would only follow if Clinton were publicly detained and compelled to testify.
“And until you see somebody like that in cuffs again, you put him in cuffs, it’s over. It’s over. Everybody will run for cover, but until then, it’s not going to happen,” Burchett said.
He concluded by predicting congressional inaction until after the midterm elections.
“It is not going to happen,” Burchett said.
“And I’m afraid they’ll never bring him in. They’ll just run the clock out until the midterms, and then then we’re screwed.”
