Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) is calling for President Donald Trump’s removal from office under the 25th Amendment following his decision earlier this week to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.
Waters made the remarks during an appearance on MSNBC, saying the dismissal showed the president was “unfit” for office.
“It is time to call for Article [Amendment] 25 of the Constitution of the United States of America to determine his unfitness, to determine that something’s wrong with this president,” Waters said.
“And I would suggest that we move very aggressively to talk about the danger to this country and to our democracy and not play around with this, because this is absolutely one of the most destructive things that this president could do.”

Waters claimed the firing could destabilize the economy.
“This stands to basically upend the entire economy. This stands to really deal with what is going to happen on Wall Street, what’s going to happen with interest rates, what’s going to happen with the President of the United States being able to make decisions that he will personally benefit from,” she argued.
The California Democrat urged Trump’s cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to declare the president unable to discharge the powers of the office.

“I want—even though I know it may not happen—the cabinet that he’s appointed, a bunch of his sycophants who probably won’t do what I would recommend, to call for Article 25 of the Constitution of the United States of America,” Waters said.
“It’s time to determine his unfitness, to determine that something’s wrong with this president.”
OFFICIAL! Maxine Waters has been BROKEN by Trump!
She says we need to invoke “Article 25” against Trump.
Too bad she didn’t realize that it’s the 25th Amendment.

President Trump announced Cook’s removal on Monday, citing allegations that she engaged in mortgage fraud.
“President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so,” Cook responded.
The Trump administration defended the decision, arguing that the Constitution and the Federal Reserve Act give the president authority to remove officials “for cause.”
Administration officials pointed to claims that Cook made false statements on mortgage applications in order to obtain more favorable loan terms.
Cook has since filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia challenging her dismissal.
The suit argues that the firing was both unlawful and without precedent.

The firing of a sitting Federal Reserve governor is an unusual move, as members of the board typically serve staggered 14-year terms and are intended to operate independently from political influence.
Cook, who had been appointed by Joe Biden and confirmed in 2022, was the first Black woman to serve as a Federal Reserve governor.
Waters, who serves as the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, has been one of the most vocal Democratic critics of Trump throughout his presidency.
Her latest remarks mark one of the most direct calls yet from a sitting lawmaker for the use of the 25th Amendment in response to an executive decision.
The case now moves to the courts, where Cook is challenging the grounds of her removal.
Meanwhile, Waters and other Democrats are expected to continue pressing their objections both to Cook’s firing and to Trump’s broader handling of economic and financial policy.
