Savanah Hernandez, a reporter for TPUSA’s Frontlines, confronted an anti-ICE protester in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday after the woman suggested Hernandez should fear deportation due to her “brown skin.”

The exchange took place outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility and was captured on video, which Hernandez later shared on social media.

“Yesterday, a white liberal tried to tell me I should be living in fear of deportation because I have ‘brown skin.’ It’s safe to say that she immediately regretted that decision,” Hernandez wrote in a post on X, alongside a clip of the interaction.

In the video, the protester told Hernandez that she should be afraid of being apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), implying that immigration enforcement is based on skin color rather than legal status.

“They’ll take you, too. They don’t really care,” the protester said.

Hernandez responded, “Excuse me? Why do you think they’re going to take me, too?”

“Because you have brown skin,” the woman replied.

“That’s pretty racist. I’m an American citizen,” Hernandez said.

“Doesn’t matter,” the protester replied.

Hernandez then turned to the camera and stated, “So, this woman right here thinks I’m going to get deported because I am a brown woman. That’s an extremely racist thing to say, ma’am.”

The woman then pointed toward the ICE facility and said, “No. The racist people are over there.”

Hernandez continued challenging the protester, calling her comments “racist” and describing the behavior as indicative of “the average white liberal.”

Hernandez also stated during the exchange that she supports immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump and voted for him in the 2024 election.

The interaction escalated when another protester attempted to accuse Hernandez of exploiting the situation for media attention.

“You are the one with blue hair right now, a whole a** adult, standing outside a detention facility calling people ‘Nazis’ in 2025,” Hernandez said in response.

The second protester was left momentarily speechless.

Hernandez then asked her whether she believed her fellow protester’s remarks were racist, but the woman declined to answer.

The confrontation occurred against the backdrop of increased national attention on the Delaney Hall ICE facility.

Earlier this week, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested on charges of trespassing after entering the facility in protest of immigration enforcement operations.

Baraka’s protest was part of a broader demonstration involving several Democratic lawmakers and activists.

According to authorities, some members of Congress are currently under investigation for allegedly assaulting federal agents during the protest, though no charges have yet been filed.

Mayor Baraka appeared in court Thursday in connection with his arrest.

The status of the investigation involving members of Congress has not been publicly updated.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policy and enforcement as the Biden-era policies continue to be rolled back and federal agencies operate under the directives of the Trump administration.

Hernandez’s video quickly gained traction online, sparking debate over immigration, race, and political discourse outside federal detention facilities.
