Amie Parnes, senior political correspondent for The Hill and co-author of the book Fight, appeared on CNN with anchor Jake Tapper this week and described the Democratic Party’s current condition as worse than it was in the immediate aftermath of the 2024 election loss.
During a segment on CNN, Parnes said internal divisions within the party have not only continued, but deepened, and that some Democratic strategists are calling for a complete overhaul of the party’s leadership and direction.
Tapper began the segment by reading a quote from the conclusion of Fight, in which Parnes and her co-author summarize the state of the Democratic Party after President Donald Trump’s re-election.
“Democrats tried to break Donald Trump. Instead they shattered again. They said they were saving the country, the presidency and the Congress from Trump and his MAGA movement, they saved nothing, not even themselves. Democrats lost everything, including their friendships.”

He then asked Parnes if the party remains in the same condition today as it was in November and December of last year.
“It’s honestly even worse right now, Jake. And I think they’re scrambling to find out who their leader is, but they’re also in the midst of an identity crisis. They don’t know who they are right now. They don’t know what their message is.”
Parnes noted that, based on conversations with Democratic strategists, many believe a full reset is needed.

“I’ve said this repeatedly over the last couple days, but I think what they need to do and what I think a lot of strategists are telling me is that they need to almost burn the house down,” she said.
“But not only burn the house down — accept some accountability and say, this is what went wrong. This is what we need to do now.”
She added that some within the party are also grappling with whether action should have been taken earlier in relation to President Joe Biden.
“Responsibility for President Biden and maybe not getting him out sooner,” she continued. “And, you know, they really need to have a little bit of introspection here.”

Since the 2024 election, in which Democrats lost the White House, a Republican-controlled House and Senate, and key gubernatorial races across the country, the party has not formally named a new leader or coalesced around a clear national message.
Parnes’ remarks come amid ongoing reports of infighting among progressive and establishment factions of the Democratic Party. Discussions about generational change, party leadership, and messaging strategies continue to dominate internal conversations as the party attempts to regroup heading into the next election cycle.
At present, there is no consensus on a single figure to lead the party or a unified platform to present to voters. Several prominent Democrats have acknowledged privately and publicly that internal divisions remain a major obstacle to rebuilding.
The Democratic National Committee has not commented in response to the CNN segment.
