Charlie Hurt and Rep. Byron Donalds criticized Democrats’ response to President Donald Trump’s actions involving Venezuela during a Fox News segment featuring Jesse Watters and Stephen Miller, arguing that opposition leaders are driven by hostility toward Trump rather than U.S. national interests or the well-being of Venezuelans.
The discussion centered on Democratic criticism of Trump’s handling of Venezuela following the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Hurt opened the exchange by addressing what he described as a sudden shift in Democratic rhetoric.
“Coming out of the woodwork who are suddenly all about domestic prosperity and America first,” Hurt said.
Donalds responded by rejecting the idea that Democrats are motivated by those principles, instead accusing them of reflexively opposing Trump regardless of the issue.
“No, they’re not. They’re just about opposing Trump. That’s what they’re about,” Donalds said.
Donalds said he dismissed Democratic objections outright, particularly criticism coming from what he described as the party’s socialist wing.
He argued that those voices were effectively defending Maduro rather than standing with American or Venezuelan interests.

“I really don’t care what the Democrats have to say on this. If you have the socialist wing of the Democrat party who’s only interested in trying to protect a narco socialist and Nicholas Maduro, then that demonstrates the depth of their insanity when it comes not only to America’s security but American political cohesion,” Donalds said.
Donalds continued by drawing a distinction between political disagreement and what he characterized as backing a hostile foreign leader. He said opposing Trump politically was one thing, but supporting Maduro crossed a different line.
“Look, you don’t if you don’t want to disagree with Donald Trump, that’s your business on a Democratic Left, but to basically back up a narco terrorist who was either a poisoning or killing the American people with drug interdictions into the United States,” Donalds said.
He accused Maduro of using Venezuela as a hub for drug trafficking and aligning himself with U.S. adversaries, including China.
“Somebody who clearly was using Venezuela as a tipping point for his own cartel, somebody who’s been in bed with China and our other adversaries around the globe,” Donalds said.
Donalds also linked Maduro’s rule to the broader socialist system established under Hugo Chávez, arguing that it led to Venezuela’s collapse and mass displacement.
“And that socialist regime that was continued by Maduro, started by Hugo Chavez, destroyed the country of Venezuela, where Venezuelan people were having to flee simply because there was no peace, there was no economic stability for them, there was no individual liberty for them,” Donalds said.
He said Democratic complaints about Trump’s actions ignored that history and the realities faced by Venezuelans under the Maduro regime.
“For the Democrats to be worried about, this is ridiculous,” Donalds said.
Donalds also pointed to actions taken by the previous administration, noting that President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris had taken aggressive steps against Maduro before leaving office.
“Last thing people need to understand Joe Biden and Kamala Harris put a $25 million bounty on Nicholas Maduro on their way out the door,” Donalds said.
He questioned why Democrats were now objecting to actions against Maduro given that history.
“So what are they complaining about? I don’t understand it. I don’t really care,” Donalds said.
Donalds concluded by saying that Democratic criticism held little weight with either Americans or Venezuelans.
“Neither do the American people and neither do the people of Venezuela,” he said.
