California State Representative Carl DeMaio issued a sharp rebuke of state Democrats on Monday after a bill to require voter ID in California elections was rejected in committee, despite overwhelming public support for such measures.

In response, DeMaio announced a new plan to bypass the legislature and place voter ID requirements directly on the 2026 ballot through a citizen-led initiative.

“When you hear them talking about defending our democracy, it is all bullshit,” DeMaio said at a press conference.

“They had a chance to improve the health of our democracy today by requiring voter ID, and they killed the bill, despite the fact that 68% of Californians in the latest polls support voter ID.”

Recent polling indicates that nearly 70% of Californians support requiring identification to vote, and an even higher percentage—79%—support citizenship verification during the voter registration process.

Despite this strong public backing, Democratic lawmakers in the California Legislature blocked the proposed legislation during a committee hearing earlier this week.

DeMaio said that the legislature’s refusal to act left voters with no choice but to take matters into their own hands.

“79% of Californians support citizenship verification in order to register to vote, and so I am here today to announce that California citizens will do the job that California politicians refuse to do,” DeMaio said.

“We will put voter ID on the ballot in 2026 using the citizens initiative process.”

The proposed citizen initiative would allow voters to decide directly whether to amend state law to require government-issued identification to vote and implement safeguards to ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote in California elections.

DeMaio, a longtime advocate for election integrity reforms, is leading the new campaign and called on Californians to get involved.

“Anyone who supports voter ID now has to get off the sidelines and into the fight,” DeMaio urged. “I urge you to join our campaign at voterIDpetition.org, voterIDpetition.org.”

California is currently one of several states that does not require voters to show identification at the polls.

Critics of voter ID laws argue they can suppress turnout, but supporters say such laws are necessary to safeguard against fraud and restore confidence in election systems.

With the initiative process now underway, DeMaio and his team will begin collecting the hundreds of thousands of valid signatures required to qualify the measure for the November 2026 ballot.

If successful, the initiative could force a statewide vote on voter ID laws—an issue that continues to receive strong support among voters, even in deep-blue California.
