The incident unfolded during a heated public forum, where city officials were sharply criticized for their fiscal priorities.

The Chicago city council voted to approve Mayor Johnson’s budget proposal following six weeks of negotiations.

However, the vote only occurred after the meeting was temporarily recessed and police cleared out vocal residents who disrupted the proceedings.

According to Fox News, part of the new budget includes a controversial $40 million line of credit to address spending needs.

Residents at the forum accused city officials of mismanaging funds and deepening the city’s financial woes. “He wants to pull a $40 million line of credit and put the city in even more debt,” one resident said during the public comment period. “It’s your fault, because you gave half of the money to illegals.”

Chicago has been at the center of the migrant crisis, with city and state officials allocating hundreds of millions of dollars to provide housing, food, and clothing for more than 35,000 migrants transported to the city. “You caused all this money to go to illegal immigrants,” another resident told Mayor Johnson and the city council. “Anything that you all pass is not genuine.”

The Windy City has faced growing backlash from its residents, particularly in predominantly black neighborhoods.

In 2023, protests erupted after city officials announced plans to house migrants in three South Side locations, including a shuttered high school.

Some residents filed legal action to halt the plan, highlighting tensions between Chicago’s long-time residents and the city’s response to the migrant influx.

The migrant surge has been a national issue, with border state governors spearheading efforts to send illegal immigrants to self-proclaimed “sanctuary” cities.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, began busing migrants to cities like Chicago and New York City in 2022 to alleviate pressure on Texas border towns.

Then-Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, also a Republican, joined the effort.

Chicago, a sanctuary city under Mayor Johnson’s leadership, has struggled to balance the needs of its residents and the growing demands of incoming migrants.

Critics argue that local taxpayers are being forced to shoulder the cost of policies they did not vote for, while services for long-time residents take a back seat.

The approved budget, including the contested $40 million loan, has added fuel to an already contentious debate.

As protests persist, the city council and Mayor Johnson face increasing scrutiny over their handling of the migrant crisis and Chicago’s fiscal health.
