Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stern warning on Tuesday about the importance of maintaining “judicial independence” in the United States, emphasizing that it is essential to preserve the integrity of the legal system, especially with President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration just weeks away.
Roberts shared his concerns in his annual report on the federal judiciary, a 15-page document that addressed ongoing challenges to the independence of the courts.
Roberts highlighted that judicial work is inherently adversarial, with cases often resulting in a winner and a loser. “Most cases have a winner and a loser,” Roberts noted, adding that every administration faces legal setbacks.
“Every Administration suffers defeats in the court system—sometimes in cases with major ramifications for executive or legislative power or other consequential topics.”

However, he stressed that despite unpopular decisions, court rulings have been respected and followed, ensuring that the nation avoided the standoffs that plagued the 1950s and 1960s.
While Roberts did not name President Trump, President Biden, or any specific lawmakers, he expressed concern over recent calls from elected officials, across the political spectrum, that suggested disregarding federal court rulings. “These dangerous suggestions, however sporadic, must be soundly rejected,” Roberts stated.
“Judicial independence is worth preserving.” He also referenced the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s words on the subject, quoting her statement that an independent judiciary is “essential to the rule of law in any land,” and warning that it “can be shattered if the society law exists to serve does not take care to assure its preservation.”
The Chief Justice urged Americans to recognize and appreciate the judicial system’s independence, calling it a critical legacy passed down from the nation’s founding generation.
He further emphasized the necessity of cooperation among the three branches of government, quoting Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, who stated that the branches must work together to ensure the effective functioning of the government while preserving judicial impartiality and independence.
Roberts also discussed the importance of the rule of law in sustaining the political and economic strength of the United States.
“Our political system and economic strength depend on the rule of law,” he wrote, reinforcing the need for continued respect for judicial decisions, even when they result in defeats for presidential administrations.
The Chief Justice’s remarks come amid several high-profile decisions by the Supreme Court, including rulings related to President Trump’s legal challenges.
One such decision was a landmark immunity ruling, which, along with a decision blocking efforts to disqualify Trump from the ballot, was hailed as a victory for the Republican nominee during the 2020 election.
However, some of these decisions, including the immunity ruling, were met with criticism from Democrats like President Biden, who called for term limits and an enforceable ethics code for the justices.
The debate surrounding judicial decisions also intensified when some Democrats and a Republican lawmaker called on President Biden to ignore a ruling by a Trump-appointed judge who revoked FDA approval for the abortion drug mifepristone.
Biden ultimately refrained from bypassing the ruling through executive action, and the Supreme Court later issued a stay, allowing the sale of the drug to continue.
In another significant case, the Court’s conservative majority ruled that Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness efforts constituted an illegal use of executive power.
These decisions have continued to stoke partisan tensions surrounding the Court’s role in shaping policy.
Roberts and Trump have had a tense relationship over the years. In 2018, Roberts rebuked Trump for referring to a judge who blocked his migrant asylum policy as an “Obama judge.”
In 2020, Roberts criticized Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer’s comments while the Court was deliberating on a major abortion case.
Roberts’ annual report also addressed concerns about the increasing threats against federal judges.
He noted that threats targeting judges have more than tripled in the past decade, citing the murders of state court judges in Wisconsin and Maryland in 2022 and 2023. “Violence, intimidation, and defiance directed at judges because of their work undermine our Republic, and are wholly unacceptable,” Roberts stated.
Absolutely wild. The top judge in the US claims public criticism of judges represents “intimidation” and even denounced an elected official for calling for the impeachment of a judge, which is the only way to remove a judge with a LIFETIME APPOINTMENT.

Roberts also pointed to the rise of disinformation about court rulings, particularly through social media, which can distort public perception and be exploited by “hostile foreign state actors” to amplify divisions.
Chief Justice John Roberts just issued his end-of-year reports and it’s a doozy. With public trust in the judiciary at all-time low, Roberts does not blame the brazen politicization of the federal bench but rather names “disinformation” as a threat, which in his mind is illegal. pic.twitter.com/hv5GqpU5r6

He warned that these threats to judicial independence must be countered to protect the integrity of the justice system.
As President Trump prepares for his second term with an ambitious conservative agenda, some of the issues he intends to address may likely face legal challenges, which could once again bring the Supreme Court into the spotlight.
With three justices appointed by Trump, the Court’s conservative majority will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of American law and policy.
However, Roberts’ emphasis on judicial independence underscores the importance of upholding the integrity of the Court, regardless of the political landscape.
