China has begun easing some of its retaliatory tariffs on American goods, marking what sources are describing as a tentative step toward de-escalating tensions in the ongoing U.S.-China trade conflict.

The rollback includes exemptions on key U.S. exports, such as semiconductors, and discussions are reportedly underway for additional exemptions affecting other major industries.

According to Caijing, a Chinese financial publication, China has reduced tariffs on at least eight categories of U.S. microchips to zero.

This is a sharp departure from previous policy, which had imposed a 125% retaliatory tariff on most American goods.

China has lifted 125% tariffs on certain US imports, according to Reuters.

The Caijing report was later deleted, but importers confirmed to The Washington Post that certain semiconductors are now exempt from the higher duties.

Chinese officials are also weighing the possibility of lifting tariffs on a range of other U.S. exports, including medical equipment, ethane, and other industrial chemicals, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

In addition, aircraft leasing transactions involving U.S. firms are reportedly being exempted from duties.

The moves come as Beijing signals openness to renewed trade discussions with the United States.

Analysts note that while the tariff reductions have not been publicly advertised by Chinese authorities, the quiet nature of the adjustments reflects an effort to avoid appearing politically weakened.

Kok Hoong Wong, head of institutional equities sales trading at Maybank Securities Pte, stated that the recent tariff changes have contributed to gains in markets across Hong Kong, China, and Japan.

“It’s another step toward a de-escalation of the trade war,” Wong said.

“While most don’t expect the U.S. and China to set aside their differences quickly, it would appear the worst may truly be over.”

In the U.S., stock markets have shown signs of stabilization.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has hovered around the 40,000 mark in recent days, reflecting reduced volatility.

Market observers suggest that easing trade tensions and the possibility of resumed negotiations could further support economic stability in the coming weeks.

The Trump administration has signaled a willingness to discuss tariff reductions but maintains that any concessions must be reciprocal.

The administration has consistently emphasized holding China accountable for what it describes as decades of unfair trade practices.

Officials have made clear that tariff enforcement remains a key strategy for rebalancing trade and strengthening American industry.

China’s recent shifts are widely seen as a response to mounting economic pressure.

With export demand under strain and domestic growth slowing, analysts suggest that the Chinese government is seeking to avoid deeper economic fallout.

A source close to the administration noted that Beijing may be concerned about potential internal unrest if economic conditions continue to worsen.

Investor and businessman Kevin O’Leary weighed in on China’s internal dynamics, stating, “Xi can only stay the Supreme Leader if people are employed.”

The comment highlights the delicate balance Chinese leadership faces between maintaining economic performance and preserving political control.

With signs of movement from Beijing, the next step could be a return to the negotiating table.

While no official schedule for talks has been released, administration officials have made clear that the door remains open for further discussions—so long as they are conducted on equal terms.
