Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, spoke about the mass shooting that took place over the weekend in Austin, Texas, describing the violence as a tragic event that left multiple victims dead and others critically injured.

Roy discussed the incident while recounting the events that unfolded near West Sixth Street, an area known for nightlife and frequently visited by University of Texas students.

“You know, this past weekend in Austin, Texas, near where I live, we had a tragedy where an individual shot a bunch of Austinians, including several University of Texas students, at a bar on what we call West Sixth Street,” Roy said.

Roy described the area as a place he was familiar with during his time studying law.

“An area that I frequented often when I was in law school, a little less often these days, but it’s an area that’s fairly normal place for people to go, not generally perceived as dangerous.”

He said the shooting occurred late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning.

“And this past Saturday night, early Sunday morning, even as I believe I was returning home from San Antonio rodeo, where I’d been there, I wake up in the morning to find out that there were three people who had been killed, and one of whom was a shooter.”

Roy said the number of fatalities later increased.

“And then later a third or a fourth person would die, a third victim.”

He described the violence as a tragedy that affected multiple people beyond those who were killed.

“And it was an unnecessary, senseless act.”

Roy also discussed the injuries suffered by other victims in the shooting.

“There were multiple others who were shot having surgeries.”

He said one of the victims was a young woman who sustained severe injuries.

“One young woman, young student who was shot multiple times in her abdomen.”

Roy also referenced another victim.

“Another young man who was shot in his head.”

He noted that the effects of the shooting extended beyond the fatalities.

“So it’s not just the three dead victims, other people who are hurt, other people who are traumatized by it.”

Roy then raised questions about the background of the suspect involved in the shooting.

“And the individual who did it was wearing a property of Allah sweatshirt.”

He said authorities found additional items connected to the suspect.

“Had a Quran in the back seat of the car that he had traveled in was wearing an Iranian flag t shirt under the property of lost sweatshirt.”

Roy described the immigration history of the individual.

“And what we know about him is that he came here from Senegal in 2000 overstayed his visa.”

He said the man later obtained legal status in the United States.

“2006 he obtains LPR or legal permanent residency status under the Bush administration.”

Roy said he believes multiple administrations share responsibility for immigration policies he criticized.

“I’m going to be an equal opportunity basher of administrations who have failed to secure our border properly.”

He said the residency status was reportedly connected to a marriage to an American citizen.

“And did so on the back of supposedly a marriage to an American citizen.”

Roy said the individual later became a U.S. citizen.

“Fast forward to 2012 under Obama, he gets full citizenship, which Obama was handing out like candy.”

Roy also referenced attempts by the individual to obtain legal status for others.

“And then tries to get status, LPR, status for two additional women, allegedly, women he was marrying.”

Roy said he was unsure of the details surrounding those relationships.

“I don’t know whether in succession or at the same time. All I know is he was trying to do that.”

He also referenced a more recent arrest connected to the suspect.

“Fast forward, he was arrested for a hit and run alleged in 2022.”

Roy said the case raised broader questions about immigration policy and national security.

“And my fundamental question is is, why are we importing people who are deeply at odds with the values of our country and western civilization?”

He questioned why individuals with those views were allowed to remain in the country.

“Why are we doing that?”

Roy also referenced immigration patterns in the years following the September 11 attacks.

“Why have we done that exponentially in the wake of the attacks of 911, 2001, it doesn’t make any sense.”

He said the tragedy could have been prevented.

“This is avoidable.”

Roy concluded by arguing that the suspect should not have remained in the United States.

“This man didn’t need to be in the United States who does not share our values, clearly, was interested in serving his convictions for Iran and radical Islamism more than his commitment to this country, peace and our rule of law.”
