Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s week just got worse as the embattled party leader faces more pressure to resign.
Four left-wing youth activist organizations, the Sunrise Movement, College Democrats of America, United We Dream Action and Voters of Tomorrow sent a letter to Schumer Thursday, titled “Gen Z To Schumer: Fight for Us or Step Aside,” urging the New York Democrat to launch a more confrontational strategy against President Donald Trump or step down from his leadership post. Schumer is facing widespread anger from many factions within the Democratic Party over his decision to vote to advance the GOP spending bill Mar. 14 to stave off a government shutdown. “Chuck Schumer, your leadership is failing to meet the moment. Your decision — along with nine other Senate Democrats — to cave and support the MAGA budget bill is just the latest example of how you and other Democratic leaders are driving young people away from the Democratic Party,” the left-wing youth organizations wrote. “If you want our support, it’s time to get bolder, get louder, or make way for leadership who will. If you don’t get this right, we are ready to take the reins of this party ourselves to shape it into a force that can fight for working people and defeat growing authoritarian power.”

The groups’ letter specifically calls for Schumer to filibuster Senate Republicans’ “MAGA agenda” despite at least two of the groups — the Sunrise Movement and Voters of Tomorrow — previously calling for the procedural rule’s abolition when Democrats controlled the Senate.
The alleged “MAGA budget bill” as described by the four activist organizations mostly continued Biden-era spending levels and incorporated none of the president’s Department of Government Efficiency cuts. Schumer has defended his decision to vote to advance the Trump-backed spending bill, arguing that letting government funding lapse would have been worse.
The letter also falsely states that the GOP spending bill cut taxes for billionaires despite the funding measure not touching tax policy.
Democratic Reps. Glenn Ivey of Maryland and Delia Ramirez of Illinois became the first congressional Democrats to publicly call for Schumer’s resignation while speaking at town halls in their districts Tuesday. Former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a longtime Schumer ally, has publicly criticized the New York Democrat twice, telling reporters Tuesday, “I myself don’t give away anything for nothing.”
Democratic lawmakers are reportedly fuming behind closed doors with one House Democrat telling Axios that Schumer’s popularity is somewhere between “Elon Musk and the Ebola virus.”
Schumer has said he has no plans to step down from Senate leadership, dubbing himself the “best leader” for Senate Democrats.
The Democratic leader postponed his cross-country book tour slated to begin Monday after left-wing grassroots groups were planning to protest the events.
