Former NBC News political analyst Chuck Todd raised doubts this week about Joe Biden’s long-standing image as a devoted family man, suggesting on his podcast that Biden’s decision to launch a presidential campaign in 2019 while his son Hunter was battling addiction may have been irresponsible.
Speaking on “The Chuck ToddCast” during a Monday episode with CNN anchor and “Original Sin” co-author Jake Tapper, Todd challenged the premise of Tapper’s book, which claims Biden’s mistake was running for reelection in 2024.
Todd instead argued that Biden’s decision to enter the 2020 race was the “original sin,” citing the ongoing struggles within Biden’s family at the time.

“So for me, the original sin was running in the first place. Because his family was in crisis,” Todd said.
“I followed that Hunter Biden [gun] trial soup to nuts. I read every single transcript. I read all of the testimony. I cannot believe to this day, Jake, that Joe Biden did this to his kids. I just can’t believe that he did it. I can’t.”
Hunter Biden was convicted by a federal jury in Delaware in June 2024 on three felony gun charges.
The conviction stemmed from his purchase of a Colt Cobra revolver in October 2018, during a time when prosecutors allege he was actively using illegal drugs.

Special counsel David Weiss charged Hunter Biden in September 2023, citing false statements made on a federal firearms purchase form and unlawful possession of a firearm while addicted to a controlled substance.
Federal prosecutors referenced Hunter’s 2021 memoir Beautiful Things to document his state of addiction in 2018.
One of the texts entered into evidence read, “I was sleeping on a car smoking crack on 4th street and Rodney,” a message Hunter sent on October 14, 2018.
Despite repeatedly stating throughout 2024 that he would not intervene in his son’s legal matters, Biden issued a presidential pardon for Hunter in December 2024, just months after the conviction.
Todd said the situation contradicts the narrative that defined Biden’s political career for decades — that of a family-centered public servant who commuted from Washington, D.C., to Delaware daily to care for his sons following the 1972 car crash that killed his first wife, Neilia, and infant daughter Naomi.
“Look, I mean, you and I covered, for most of our professional lives, the story of Joe Biden was this guy cared about his family so much he commuted home every night from Washington,” Todd said.
“By the way, you know what else you could say is this man was so ambitious that after his family went through that tragedy, he commuted every day to work. Like, it’s the same story. It’s all about the narrative. I sit here, I look at this, and I think, were we sold a 40-year bill of goods?”
Biden’s political narrative often focused on overcoming personal tragedy.
Following the 1972 accident, Biden raised his surviving sons Beau and Hunter as a single father for several years, frequently citing his use of Amtrak to return home from the Capitol daily.
Todd also previously commented on Biden’s campaign decision in connection to Hunter’s legal issues.
“I followed the Hunter Biden trial very closely. I read every transcript, all the testimony … all that was made public … you want to get angry just as somebody, and just all these mixed emotions, you read the Hallie Biden transcript, and that’s Beau’s widow,” Todd said.
“And essentially, he turned her into a crack addict. And this was all happening in 2017, 2018.”
He continued, “And Joe and Jill Biden were so concerned about their family that they decided to run for president … So when you talk about the word selfish, it’s almost like the word doesn’t — I mean, their decision to run for president put the entire Democratic Party and the United States of America in the position that it’s in now.”
The comments from Todd, a longtime mainstream political commentator, mark a notable shift in tone toward Biden from a figure historically aligned with establishment media coverage.
Neither Biden nor his representatives have publicly responded to Todd’s remarks.
