A California-based federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Thursday to reinstate thousands of fired federal workers.
U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup, a Clinton appointee, directed six agencies to immediately offer jobs back to probationary employees who had been terminated in a ruling from the bench, according to several reports.
“It is sad, a sad day when our government would fire some good employee and say it was based on performance when they know good and well that’s a lie,” Alsup said, according to Politico.
Agencies covered by the order include the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Energy, Interior and Treasury. “This is not ‘some wild and crazy judge in San Francisco said some administration cannot engage in a reduction in force,’” Alsup said, according to Government Executive.
Alsup said in a Feb. 27 ruling that OPM did not have the authority to order the terminations. Labor unions representing federal workers filed the lawsuit challenging OPM’s directive Feb. 19 .
