New York City Councilman Joseph Borelli (R) called out CNN anchor Abby Phillip for her remarks about President Donald Trump’s recent pardons of January 6 defendants, accusing Democrats of holding a double standard on violence against law enforcement.
The exchange took place during a CNN interview, where Borelli defended the pardons and criticized the Democratic Party’s response.
President Trump recently issued pardons for several individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol protest.

Many of these individuals had been detained for years without trial and faced harsh consequences, including loss of employment, reputations, and family connections.
The pardons, long promised by Trump during his campaign, aim to address what his supporters view as an unjust system targeting non-violent participants in the event.
During the interview, Abby Phillip questioned the rationale behind the pardons, framing them as a dangerous precedent.
She pressed Borelli to denounce the pardons, asking: “I don’t understand how hard it is to say violent criminals shouldn’t be pardoned for trying to have an insurrection and stop the peaceful transfer of power. Can you say that? Just out of curiosity.”
Borelli responded forcefully, acknowledging the need for consequences for those who assaulted law enforcement officers but highlighting what he called the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party.
“Look, I’m okay that these people, especially those that assaulted cops, actually faced some consequence,” Borelli said.
“But I won’t cede an inch of the moral high ground on that issue—specifically law enforcement—to anybody who represents the Democratic Party in general.”
Borelli then pointed to incidents of violence against law enforcement in cities like New York and California, where he said Democratic leaders have failed to act.
“This is a party, especially here where we are in New York, you could have seen all summer New York City police officers getting assaulted and beaten,” he continued.
“You have Rikers Island, where correction officers get stabbed, slashed, and beaten every day. The Democratic Party here in this state and nationwide doesn’t say boo. We have a Soros prosecutor who won’t prosecute these people.”
The councilman contrasted the lengthy sentences for some January 6 defendants with what he described as leniency for those who attack law enforcement in cities governed by Democrats.
“These January 6th guys that assaulted cops—they were in jail for two years, three years. That’s fine with me. If you do the same thing here to a cop in this city, you’re lucky if you get three hours in the slammer. California is the exact same way,” Borelli said.
Borelli also defended Trump’s decision to issue the pardons, noting that the issue had been debated throughout Trump’s campaign and presidency.
“January 6th was not a great day for America, but to your point, it was litigated,” he said.
“Trump ran for office from day one saying he was going to do this. The American public had their chance to weigh in. He got elected, and he did it. And now we’re going to have to move forward.”

The councilman’s remarks reflect broader frustrations among conservatives over what they see as uneven enforcement of justice and political weaponization of law enforcement.
The debate over Trump’s pardons is likely to continue as the country grapples with the legacy of January 6 and its aftermath.
