Newsmax host Rob Finnerty criticized CNN’s credibility after the network reported it had gained access to Iran during the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.

Finnerty argued that the network’s coverage highlighted what he described as long-standing concerns about CNN’s reliability and bias.

During his program, Finnerty questioned why viewers continue to rely on CNN for news coverage and suggested the network has shifted away from its earlier reputation.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“I honestly can’t believe that people still watch CNN and think they’re getting honest news coverage about anything, or that there are still people who consciously turn on the TV and deliberately, by their own free will, put on CNN and think they are not watching our little American version of state run regime media news that is meant to manipulate and not inform,” Finnerty said.

Finnerty acknowledged that many Americans have encountered the network in public places such as airports or bars but said he believes its reputation has declined significantly over time.

“I think we’ve all watched it at one point or another, at the airport or at a bar,” Finnerty said.

“There was a time when CNN was okay, but that time was a long time ago.”

His remarks came after CNN aired a segment describing its reporting presence in Iran.

In the broadcast, a CNN host said the network had secured permission from Iranian authorities to operate inside the country while maintaining editorial independence.

“CNN is the first network inside Iran since the start of the war with the US and Israel, with the government’s permission there on Iran and this morning, CNN, Fred Pleitgen sat down for an exclusive interview with a top Iranian official, a foreign policy adviser to the office of the Supreme Leader,” the host said.

The host added that the network operates in Iran under government regulations but retains control over its reporting.

“Fred Pleitgen is in Tehran. And just a note, as I mentioned, Tehran, our CNN operates in Iran with the permission of the government there, as required under local regulations, but maintains full editorial control over what it reports.”

Finnerty reacted skeptically to the announcement, suggesting that CNN’s access to Iran should raise questions rather than serve as a point of pride.

“Yeah, sure, like it’s 1992 and CNN is bragging to their audience that they were the only network invited into Iran by the Iranian regime to cover the war like it’s a good thing,” Finnerty said.

He argued that the Iranian government likely chose CNN for reasons that critics of the network have frequently cited.

“I can picture the executives at CNN running down the hall so excited to tell everybody that they were out of all the networks that Iran could have chosen, Fox, Newsmax MS NOW, CNN was the only American network invited to cover Iran from inside Iran,” Finnerty said.

“Completely missing the irony of why Iran picked CNN in the first place.”

According to Finnerty, the reason is tied to criticism of CNN that has been voiced by President Donald Trump.

“Iran picked them because Iran knows that CNN is fake news, which is exactly what they want, fake coverage about what’s really happening,” Finnerty said, adding that Trump has frequently made similar claims about the network.

Trump has repeatedly criticized CNN’s reporting and leadership.

“You’re gutless losers. I say that to CNN because I watch it. I have no choice. I got to watch that garbage. It’s all garbage. It’s all fake news,” Trump said.

“But I think CNN is a gutless group of people, and the people that run it, nobody even knows. It’s been sold so many times, but the people that run it ought to be ashamed.”

Finnerty also pointed to Iran’s media environment, which is tightly controlled by the government and lacks independent news organizations.

He said that context should make CNN’s access to the country more controversial rather than noteworthy.

“CNN was the only network invited into a country controlled by a violent dictator, where there are no independent news outlets, everything is state controlled,” Finnerty said.

“All they have is Iranian state media who report whatever the regime tells them to report.”

Finnerty argued that the decision by Iranian authorities to allow CNN to report from inside the country should not be viewed as a journalistic achievement.

“But Iran felt comfortable enough inviting CNN into the country to cover the war, which is not a compliment,” Finnerty said.

“But CNN is bragging about it like it’s some credit to them. It’s not. It’s pathetic, because CNN and Iranian state media are essentially the same thing, separated by 8000 miles.”
