Americans continue to believe that President Donald Trump would be performing better in the White House than former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to new polling data highlighted by CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten.
During a recent CNN segment, Enten pointed to a CNN/SSRS poll showing Trump leading Harris by two points, 45% to 43%, on the question of who would be doing a better job as president.
Despite Trump’s overall favorability remaining underwater in several polls, Enten said the data consistently shows that when matched head-to-head against Democrats, Trump continues to come out ahead.

“This is the key nugget here,” Enten said.
“It’s not just about regretting that vote, it’s literally saying who’d be doing the better job right now, and Trump continues to score a higher percentage of the vote than Kamala Harris. This looks a heck of a lot like the election result — we have just seen this in poll after poll after poll.”
Enten explained that although Trump’s favorability numbers may appear weak in isolation, his numbers improve significantly when he is compared to his real-world competition.
“When you match Donald Trump against actual competition, Donald Trump comes out ahead,” Enten said.

He referenced an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll that showed 40% of Americans trust Trump to handle the country’s “main problems,” compared to just 32% who trust congressional Democrats.
“It’s an 8-point advantage, which in this politics — well, that’s a wide ocean,” Enten said.
The data reporter further cited results from a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing that registered voters favor Republicans over Democrats by wide margins on two of the most pressing national issues: immigration and the economy.
According to that survey, Republicans hold a 19-point advantage over Democrats on immigration and a 9-point advantage on economic matters.
“The GOP crushes the Democrats,” Enten said while reviewing the data.
“That’s a 19-point edge. My goodness gracious, you rarely see leads like that in politics.”
Enten also warned that these trends should be a “major wake-up call” for Democrats, urging the party to reassess its messaging and approach to voter concerns.
He pointed to a separate ABC News/Washington Post poll showing 37% of respondents believe Trump would do a better job handling the nation’s challenges, compared to 30% who trust the Democratic Party.
The poll also revealed a growing disconnect between Democratic leadership and the public.
According to the survey, 70% of Americans believe the Democratic Party is “out of touch” with everyday concerns, while 60% said the same of Trump — a significant gap in voter perception.
Democrats are also facing historic lows in favorability. A CNN/SSRS poll from March found that the Democratic Party had a 29% favorability rating — its lowest figure since 1992.
Enten’s analysis underscores a broader trend in public opinion polls, which consistently show President Trump and the Republican Party outperforming Democrats on key issues that matter most to voters heading into the second half of Trump’s second term.
