Democrats and Republicans on the House Oversight Committee released competing batches of documents Wednesday related to the late Jeffrey Epstein, setting off a public dispute over the handling of victim information and raising new questions about the political motivations behind selective disclosures, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Democrats released a set of emails from Epstein early Wednesday in which the deceased financier claimed that President Donald Trump “spent hours at my house” with one of Epstein’s victims. In that initial release, committee Democrats redacted the name of the woman referenced in the email.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra ruled Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, that federal prosecutors violated the rights of victims by secretly reaching a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein, a wealthy financier accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls. Republicans, who later published 23,000 pages of documents obtained from Epstein’s estate, identified the woman as Virginia Giuffre.

In her memoir, Giuffre wrote that Trump “never did anything wrong,” a detail that became central to the disagreement over the Democrats’ decision to conceal her name.

During an interview on CNN, Rep. Jasmine Crockett was pressed by anchor Pamela Brown about the omission. Brown asked, “She wrote a book, as you know, and she did not accuse [Trump] of any wrongdoing. What do you make of it?”

Crockett replied, “Can you confirm that? Yeah, I don’t know. Obviously, it’s redacted who the victim is, so I won’t necessarily take the Republican word on who it is that’s redacted. And I don’t know why they would necessarily redact someone’s name who is deceased at this point.”

Brown responded, “The Democrats did that, though.”

Crockett answered, “The Democrats were — no, no, I understand. But just saying, like, our biggest concern is to actually make sure we are protecting victims. And obviously, she wrote a book; she told her truth.”

The materials released Wednesday come as both parties on the committee continue their investigation into Epstein’s activities, separate from the Department of Justice’s prior case.

The GOP release included an email in which Epstein claimed he possessed compromising photos of “dirty” Trump, though no images were included in the documents made public.

The White House held an emergency meeting with senior Department of Justice officials shortly after the release of the emails.

President Trump’s top officials met in the White House Situation Room with Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert while bipartisan efforts in the House continued to push for a vote on making the DOJ’s Epstein case files public.

The disclosures renewed attention on Trump’s past interactions with Epstein and on questions about what he may have known regarding what prosecutors described as Epstein’s yearslong exploitation of underage girls.

Trump has repeatedly denied any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activity and has said that he ended their relationship years before Epstein’s 2019 death in federal custody.

President Trump did not take questions from reporters Wednesday after inviting the press into the Oval Office to observe him signing legislation formally ending the government shutdown.

The emails released by Democrats included the 2011 message referencing the unnamed victim, though Republicans later confirmed it was Giuffre.

Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges. The full 23,000-page batch of documents released Wednesday was provided to the Oversight Committee by Epstein’s estate.
