CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten delivered a stark message to Democrats on Monday, pointing to fresh polling data showing that Republicans continue to lead on the issue voters care about most: the economy.
During a segment breaking down recent trends, Enten noted that Republican dominance on economic trust has not only held steady but, in some cases, expanded — despite sustained efforts from the Democrats to reshape public perception.
Referencing polling from November 2023, Enten highlighted that Republicans led Democrats by 11 points on which party voters trusted more to handle the economy.

Nearly a year later, even after a concerted Democratic messaging campaign, that margin remains substantial.
Current polling shows the GOP still leading by eight points in most surveys, with a Reuters/Ipsos poll now placing that lead at 12 points, up from nine last year.
“How is that possible, Democrats?” Enten asked during his appearance, voicing frustration over the party’s inability to shift voter opinion despite the narrative work carried out over the last year.
He referenced key topics such as recession fears, inflation, stock market trends, and trade policies — all areas where public sentiment continues to favor Republicans.

Enten added that the Democratic Party is losing more than polling margins — they are losing ground on their traditional identity.
“They have traditionally been the party of the middle class. No more,” he said.

That statement signals a significant change in public perception, with working-class voters increasingly aligning with the GOP.
The discussion extended to CNN This Morning, where anchor Audie Cornish and Axios economics reporter Courtenay Brown examined the broader implications of the data.
Cornish noted that Republicans hold polling advantages on multiple key issues, including the economy, crime, and immigration, though she added that “those numbers are starting to slip” in some areas.
Brown, however, pushed back on the reliability of the polling, claiming that economic sentiment has become too politically charged to measure accurately.
“We can’t get a clean read on how consumers feel about the economy, because the data has been infected by partisanship really in an unprecedented manner,” she said.
When asked to clarify, Brown explained, “Do people think the economy is not doing well, or do they just not like who’s in the White House? This is a huge problem right now.”
She added that this supposed politicization of consumer sentiment makes it “impossible to get that clarity that economists like to see about how consumers are doing, do they intend to spend. Makes it impossible to forecast.”

The polling and commentary come at a time when voters continue to list economic issues as their top concern in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms.
Republicans have pointed to several economic markers during the Biden-Harris administration, including a spike in inflation, high gas prices, and increased costs on household essentials, as indicators that the public’s economic dissatisfaction is grounded in lived experience, not partisanship.
Enten’s analysis is the latest in a string of polling breakdowns signaling challenges for Democrats heading into the next cycle.
For now, the data continues to reflect that a plurality of voters believe Republicans — and President Donald Trump in particular — are better equipped to handle the economy.
