In a recent visit to the southern border, Kamala Harris, the Democrat presidential nominee, attempted to show her stance on border security amid ongoing criticisms and upcoming election pressures.

The visit took place in Arizona on Friday, where Harris stood alongside Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ).

Vice President Kamala Harris holds a campaign event near the U.S.-Mexico border at Cochise College’s Douglas Campus on Sept. 27, 2024, in Douglas.

However, her interaction was minimal, limited to brief speech delivery and coordinated photo sessions, notably excluding any substantive dialogue with the frontline border patrol agents.

Interestingly, Harris’s border trip coincided with troubling new data from ICE which reported a distressing number of non-detained illegal immigrants, convicted of violent offenses, freely moving within the country despite having received final deportation orders.

This grim statistic showcases a deeply rooted issue that Harris chose not to address during her visit.

The visit, which some critics are calling a superficial attempt to appear tough on issues of legal and illegal immigration, drew sharp criticism from several corners. CNN political analyst Scott Jennings offered a scathing review during a televised discussion. “In fact, I think the Trump campaign line today ought to be arsonist returns to scene of crime. I mean, look at the last three-and-a-half years, we’ve got the border is effectively been opened, people flowing across,” Jennings commented.

He also highlighted that despite ICE disclosing there are over 13,000 noncitizens convicted of homicide and nearly 16,000 convicted of sexual offenses currently in the U.S., these crucial facts were overlooked during Harris’s appearance.

Jennings further critiqued Harris’s last-minute efforts as merely tactical, suggesting it was a strategic mistake for her campaign.

He argued, “[She is] trying to rush and pay some lip service to this issue… and I think they have very little to say that the American people are going to buy on this today.”

He expounded on the broader implications of Harris’s policy preferences and her past actions regarding immigration laws: “On the first day, they rescinded all of Donald Trump’s border executive orders. The floodgates opened. All of these people come rushing across. Then it becomes a political problem. And now, at the end of the election, they want to blame it on Donald Trump.”

Adding to the discourse, cartoonist and political commentator Scott Adams expressed his amusement at Jennings’ candid remarks and the reaction it elicited from other panelists, tweeting, “Watching Scott Jennings cause his cohosts to make those faces while hearing the truth is my new favorite hobby.”

This pointed dialogue and the timing of Harris’s border visit, wrapped in political undertones, highlight the polarizing debate over immigration reform and border security as key topics in the run-up to the November election.
