CNN’s Brian Stelter Raises Red Flags Over Biden Cancer Announcement Timing [WATCH]

CNN’s Brian Stelter raised concerns Sunday about the timing of Joe Biden’s stage IV prostate cancer diagnosis, which came on the heels of damaging audio leaks and ahead of the release of a major political book detailing Biden’s decline while in office.

Speaking during a panel discussion, Stelter remarked, “The timing is just extraordinary,” referring to the convergence of events that occurred on Friday. That same day, audio recordings were released of Biden’s 2023 interview with special counsel Robert Hur, in which Biden appeared to struggle with basic recall and coherent speech during a classified documents probe.

“Biden learned of his cancer diagnosis Friday. And what was the biggest Biden story on Friday? It was the release of those excruciating audio excerpts from his 2023 conversations with Robert Hur,” Stelter said.

He noted that the audio release and the upcoming book, Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, have intensified scrutiny of Biden’s fitness for office.

The audio recordings captured Biden appearing confused and asking, “Am I making any sense to you?”—a moment that aligned with Hur’s conclusion that Biden was a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Hur declined to prosecute Biden in the documents case, citing doubts that a jury would view him as mentally fit enough to stand trial.

Just as speculation swirled over Biden’s capacity and legacy, his office released a statement disclosing that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement read.

The diagnosis follows an earlier report that a “small nodule” was found on Biden’s prostate after he began experiencing increased urinary symptoms.

Biden’s team said the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive and “might be effectively managed by various treatments.”

Biden, 82, has previously undergone cancer-related procedures.

In February 2023, he had a cancerous lesion removed from his chest. Before assuming office, he also had several non-melanoma skin cancer spots removed using Mohs surgery.

The health update has added to growing public and political concern about Biden’s age and capacity.

In February 2024, while still in office, Biden’s physician declared him “fit to serve” following a routine physical at Walter Reed Medical Center.

But the audio recordings and new book cast doubt on that assessment.

Stelter pivoted during the discussion to promote the upcoming book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson.

Original Sin reportedly details a systemic effort by Biden’s aides, family members, and senior Democrats to conceal the extent of his cognitive decline during his presidency and re-election campaign.

The book alleges that Biden’s inner circle limited access to him—even from cabinet members—to prevent revelations about his deteriorating condition. In one excerpt, staffers are said to have reminded Biden of the year his son Beau died during legal proceedings.

According to publisher Penguin, the book outlines a “public deception that has few precedents” and describes Biden’s decision to run for reelection as “shockingly narcissistic, self-delusional, and reckless.”

While Stelter stopped short of suggesting that the Biden team deliberately timed the cancer diagnosis announcement to shift media focus, he acknowledged that it temporarily interrupted a mounting political crisis.

“This debate doesn’t end at all… but it is briefly put on pause as a result of today’s news,” he said.

The cancer revelation came just days after Biden resumed public appearances.

On May 8, he and former First Lady Jill Biden participated in a joint interview on The View.

He also gave a pre-recorded interview to the BBC commemorating Victory in Europe Day.

Biden ended his presidency as the oldest person to ever serve in the White House.

Amid increasing doubts about his health and mental sharpness, he exited the 2024 race and allowed Vice President Kamala Harris, 60, to take over the Democratic ticket.

Following the cancer diagnosis, both Democratic and Republican figures offered messages of support.

Former President Donald Trump released a statement on Truth Social, writing, “We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Within the Democratic Party, some lawmakers are now publicly acknowledging that Biden should not have run for reelection.

Several have said they were misled by advisers who maintained that Biden was healthy enough to serve, despite increasing signs to the contrary.
