Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) joined Senate Republicans on Friday in voting for the GOP-backed spending bill, a move that led to criticism from within his own party.
The bill passed with a 62-38 vote, allowing the government to avoid a shutdown that would have taken effect early Saturday morning.
During CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, political commentator Scott Jennings mocked the situation, sarcastically praising Schumer for standing against what Democrats had previously referred to as “Jim Crow filibuster tactics.”

“I’m grateful for Chuck Schumer today. He helped defeat a racist Jim Crow filibuster in the Senate. To stand up against the racist Jim Crow filibuster tactics was a moment of pure courage. I just think he should be lauded by anybody in any party for that. That’s number one. Number two—” Jennings said before being interrupted.
The filibuster, a procedural tool often used by the minority party, was bypassed Friday evening with the support of nine Senate Democrats who joined Schumer in advancing the bill beyond the 60-vote threshold.
The move comes despite previous Democratic efforts to eliminate the filibuster in 2022, a push that was ultimately blocked by then-Senators Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) and Joe Manchin (D-WV).
CNN host Jake Tapper provided context for Jennings’ remarks, explaining, “When there was a Democratic push against the filibuster, people in the Democratic Party were saying it was a racist-era Jim Crow-era tactic. So [Jennings is] being cheeky.”

Jennings continued his remarks, adding, “Not only that, but he saved us from the Democrats in the House, laying off every single veteran in the federal government. Chuck Schumer, working with Donald Trump, saved us from that. So I think he deserves a lot of credit this morning. Every veteran would have been laid off!”
Following the vote, former Senator Kyrsten Sinema called out her former Democratic colleagues for their inconsistency on the filibuster.
Responding to Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who criticized the spending bill and urged Senate Democrats not to “betray working families,” Sinema pointed to past Democratic opposition to the filibuster.
“Just surprised to see support for the ‘Jim Crow filibuster’ here,” Sinema wrote on X, attaching a screenshot of a September 2024 post in which Jayapal had called for the elimination of the filibuster.

Republican strategist Brad Todd weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the internal division among Democrats.
“Scott’s having a lot of fun at the Democrats’ disarray. I’ll tell you what. As Republicans this week, we have overdosed on popcorn watching this Democrat Civil War,” Todd said.
He also pointed to a new CNN poll showing that 16% of Democrats believe their party has become “too extreme.”
“That’s the voice Democrats should be listening to and the one Hakeem Jeffries should be listening to right now. The far left is going to crash the ship if they let him,” Todd added.
Before the Senate vote, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) opposed what he called the “far-right Republican funding bill,” stating that House Democrats were prepared to support a short-term spending resolution instead.
On Friday, after Schumer’s decision to back the bill, Jeffries declined to answer a reporter’s question about whether it was “time for new leadership in the Senate.”
The vote highlights ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party as leadership faces pressure from both moderate and progressive wings.
