CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings drew attention Thursday for his unusual reaction to the escalating feud between President Donald Trump and X CEO Elon Musk, a clash that played out publicly across social media and cable news.
During an appearance on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper, Jennings was asked about the increasingly bitter exchange between the two influential figures.
Tapper joked about who would “get” Jennings in the event of a “divorce” between Trump and Musk, referring to the online fallout unfolding on X.

Jennings responded by reaching for a nearby trash can and placing his head inside it on camera.
“Let me just tell you what every Republican is doing,” Jennings said from inside the can.
“Here’s where we are today.”
He continued, “We’re literally, heads are in the garbage can right now. That’s the state of everyone I know at the moment. Not gonna lie. It’s an ugly day, and you know you hate it when your friends are fighting.”

Jennings added that he believed both men had worked together toward shared goals.
“I continue to believe that their partnership last year saved America, and I also continue to believe their goals are not mutually exclusive.”

Jennings’ remarks followed a series of public comments from Musk criticizing a congressional spending bill supported by Trump’s allies.
The bill, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, was intended to consolidate several policy priorities into a single legislative package aimed at boosting American manufacturing, energy independence, and economic growth.
On X, Musk posted, “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

Shortly after that post, Musk added, “In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people.”

The online exchange intensified Thursday when Musk posted a now deleted message suggesting that President Trump’s name was connected to the Jeffrey Epstein files.
“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” Musk wrote.
The post triggered widespread reaction across both conservative and mainstream media platforms.
No evidence was presented to substantiate the claim, and the post reignited debate over the contents and release of sealed Epstein-related documents.
Federal authorities have been in possession of the Epstein files for several years, with much of the documentation still sealed.
During the Trump administration, FBI leadership reportedly faced internal pressure to investigate potential misconduct related to Epstein’s network, although little public progress has been disclosed.
Former FBI official James Dennehy was reportedly involved in internal decisions regarding those documents.
While Musk’s claim received significant attention online, President Trump did not respond directly to the allegation.
Instead, he issued a brief comment through a spokesperson: “Oh boy. We shall see how this ends.”
The feud between the two figures—once seen as aligned on key policy goals such as deregulation, free speech, and economic independence—has now sparked a public reckoning among conservative commentators and voters.
