Since Donald Trump’s election victory, liberal media and Democrats have been grappling with how he managed to win against the odds.
Their struggle to comprehend the political shift has highlighted a significant disconnect with a changing media landscape.
One person who seems to grasp the phenomenon is CNN’s Van Jones.

During a conversation with former CNN commentator Chris Cillizza, Jones outlined how Trump capitalized on the rise of new media while legacy mainstream outlets failed to adapt.
“How the hell did Donald Trump figure out that the mainstream media is the fringe and the fringe is now the mainstream… The 78-year-old guy who doesn’t even have a computer and still, like, writes handwritten notes? How did he become the guy who cracked the code?” Cillizza asked Jones.
Jones credited Elon Musk and Barron Trump for influencing Trump’s media strategy.
He pointed out that Trump’s willingness to appear on unconventional platforms, like podcasts, set him apart. According to Jones, it wasn’t just external advice—Trump himself recognized the shift and acted on it.
“Everybody keeps—I mean, the problem is you have a framework in your mind that, ‘How can Donald Trump, how could Donald Trump?’ Guys, can we cut it out? Donald Trump is not an idiot,” Jones said.
“Donald Trump, let me just be very clear. Donald Trump is smarter than me, you, and all critics. You know how I know? Because he has the White House, the Senate, the House, the popular vote…”
Jones acknowledged Trump’s political strategy as groundbreaking, attributing his success to a combination of smart decisions, bold moves, and tangible policies.
Jones also highlighted the fervor of Trump’s political movement, comparing it to nothing seen before.
“This dude is a phenomenon. He is the most powerful human on Earth and in our lifetime. And we’re still saying, ‘Well, how is this guy [doing it]?’ We look like idiots,” he said.
Van Jones calls out liberal media figures for habitually saying that Trump is stupid, and notes that mainstream media figures are the ones that end up ‘looking like idiots’:

Cillizza echoed Jones’ sentiments, admitting that Democrats had struggled to match Trump’s approach.
While Trump embraced modern platforms and reached across diverse audiences, Democrats lagged behind, focusing on traditional tactics like door-knocking.
Jones specifically called out Kamala Harris, noting her inability to connect with influential voices like Joe Rogan during the campaign.
He emphasized that Trump was open to engaging with anyone, even critics, to share his message and policies.
“Unlike Kamala Harris, [Trump] had concrete policies and answers,” Jones remarked. “You’re talking about a guy who was able to survive and triumph over everything thrown against him.”
Jones’ candid remarks highlight the divide between those who understood the political shift and those still entrenched in outdated strategies.
His praise for Trump is likely to ruffle feathers within Democratic circles, where the narrative has often focused on blaming external factors for electoral losses rather than examining internal shortcomings.
While Jones’ nod to Trump’s political strategy may be controversial among liberals, it sheds light on the changing currents of U.S. politics and the media’s shifting influence.
