CNN political contributor Van Jones called on President Donald Trump to fire, investigate, and potentially prosecute all federal employees associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency he linked to billionaire Elon Musk.

The remarks were made during an appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN, where Jones expressed concern about the influence Musk’s allies allegedly hold within the federal government.

“Look, a couple of things. One is, you know, the power that Elon Musk still has is significant,” Jones said during the interview.

“Somebody said Trump has three and a half more years, Elon has 40. He’s a billionaire. He’s got a long-term play.”

Cooper responded, “I believe it was Elon Musk who said that.”

Jones continued, “Elon’s correct. You good at math? But the other piece of it is those DOGE employees are very dangerous. If Donald Trump is smart, the first thing he’s going to do is fire, investigate and prosecute all of Elon’s people who are all throughout government with their laptops downloading data right now.”

Pressed by Cooper on whether prosecution was warranted, Jones replied, “Listen, I don’t think that what they’re doing is legal. A lot of them don’t have the proper clearances. And I think that if you investigate, you’ll find they’ve uploaded data into servers that are… the wrong thing to do. So I think there should definitely be an investigation there.”

Jones added, “If Donald Trump is smart, the leverage that Elon has is he left, his kids didn’t. They’re still in there. So this fight, if it’s going to be a fight that Donald Trump prevails on in the short term, go after DOGE. Long term, he’s got to steal the Republican Party to deal with an Elon Musk that’s promising to spend money now and a decade from now.”

Jones’ comments come amid rising tensions between President Trump and Musk, following public disputes on social media.

Earlier this week, Musk claimed in a post on X that Trump’s name appeared in the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, a claim that was not substantiated with evidence.

Musk wrote, and later deleted, “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

The statement drew backlash and renewed scrutiny, although no official records or legal filings have confirmed the allegation.

Following that post, Musk responded “yes” to a separate suggestion on X that Trump should be impeached. Musk has deleted that post as well.

The statement was made in response to a post by influencer Ian Miles Cheong, a frequent Musk ally on the platform, who wrote, “President vs. Elon. Who wins? My money’s on Elon. Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him.”

Musk’s agreement marked a public escalation of what had been a previously cordial relationship between the Tesla CEO and the president. Trump has not responded publicly to Musk’s statements or the impeachment suggestion.
