These operations, which are part of a broader Department of Homeland Security initiative, include intercepting vessels carrying illegal migrants attempting to enter the United States.
On Saturday, USCG Southern California reported a significant operation involving a sinking migrant vessel near San Diego.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Coast Guard detailed the incident, stating, “The migrant vessel began to sink shortly after the Active crew stopped the voyage. All persons aboard the sinking vessel were safely removed and transferred to CBP.”

The vessel carried nine migrants who were intercepted by the crew aboard the cutter Active.
The operation was part of a coordinated effort led by the Eleventh Coast Guard District in California.
This initiative involves deploying resources and personnel from across the nation to support border security efforts. The USCG has been working closely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to manage these missions.
In addition to maritime interceptions, the USCG is conducting flight operations to transport intercepted migrants to designated locations in Texas and California.
From these locations, the Department of Defense assumes responsibility for further transporting the migrants out of the United States.
According to a statement from the Coast Guard, these efforts are in line with the directives outlined in the President’s Executive Orders.

Adm. Kevin Lunday, the Coast Guard’s acting commandant, emphasized the importance of these operations in safeguarding national security.
“In accordance with the President’s Executive Orders, the Coast Guard continues to surge assets and leverage its unique capabilities to protect America’s borders, territorial integrity, and sovereignty,” Lunday said.
Lunday also highlighted the collaborative nature of the missions, which involve coordination with multiple federal agencies.
“[The] operation exemplifies our coordination with our Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense teammates, through which we are detecting, deterring, and interdicting aliens, drug smuggling, and other terrorist or hostile activity before it reaches our border,” he added.
The Coast Guard’s ongoing efforts come amid increasing challenges at the southern border, where illegal migration continues to strain resources.
By integrating resources from various regions and agencies, the Coast Guard aims to bolster border security and mitigate risks associated with unlawful maritime crossings.
The USCG remains committed to its mission of protecting U.S. waters and ensuring that migrants are safely handled and transferred to appropriate authorities.
This operation marks just one of several initiatives underway as the Coast Guard, in collaboration with DHS and DoD, works to strengthen the nation’s border defenses.
