Chaos erupted Monday night on Columbia University’s East Campus after a student-athlete allegedly hurled a homemade Molotov cocktail from his dorm room, prompting a flurry of 911 calls and another stain on the Ivy League school’s reputation, as reported by The New York Post.
Fortunately, the bottle wasn’t lit, but the intent raised serious concerns — especially at a time when elite campuses are already under fire for harboring radicals and tolerating instability.
The suspect, 22-year-old senior Javen Jovero, is no stranger to the Columbia community. He’s a wrestler for the university and a senior studying electrical engineering — a far cry from someone you’d expect to be tossing incendiary devices out of windows.

But police say Jovero filled a plastic bottle with rubbing alcohol, stuffed a sock into the neck, and threw it from his dorm window around 8:30 p.m., startling nearby students.
No injuries were reported, but that doesn’t make this any less dangerous. An object like that, thrown from a dormitory, could easily result in death or injury — regardless of whether it was lit.

Campus police and emergency services responded immediately, and Jovero was transported to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Authorities have since charged him with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.
The bigger question: What’s going on at Columbia?
Administrators haven’t connected Jovero’s actions to the ongoing political firestorm surrounding the university since Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack on Israel.
But the timing doesn’t help the school’s image. Columbia has become ground zero for leftist student unrest, pro-Hamas rallies, and open defiance of law and order. It’s no surprise that tensions are boiling over.

While Columbia refused to comment, this is just one more entry in a growing list of campus disruptions involving foreign nationals and radical sympathizers.
Earlier this month, Badar Khan Suri, a student at Georgetown University, was detained after allegedly supporting a terrorist organization. A federal judge temporarily blocked his deportation, highlighting just how broken our immigration system has become.
And then there’s Yunseo Chung, another Columbia student, who lost her permanent resident status but can’t be detained — thanks again to activist judicial rulings.

These incidents are part of a disturbing trend on America’s most prestigious campuses. The institutions that once claimed to be bastions of knowledge and discipline are now turning into breeding grounds for lawlessness, mental instability, and anti-American sentiment.
From elite athletes throwing firebombs to students playing footsie with terrorists, it’s clear that something’s deeply wrong in the ivory towers.
Maybe it’s time for Columbia — and universities like it — to stop focusing on woke activism and start focusing on the basics: discipline, safety, and respect for the rule of law.
