Comedian Amber Ruffin Reveals She Will Go Full Liberal Hack At WHCA Dinner, Doesn’t Want Trump To Attend

Comedian Amber Ruffin, who has been chosen as the entertainer for this year’s White House Correspondent Association’s dinner, revealed in an interview with CNN that she does not want the president to attend.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told the Daily Caller on Wednesday that both herself and President Donald Trump were still considering whether they will attend the WHCA dinner in April. Ruffin told CNN host Jake Tapper that she doubts anyone is “looking forward” to being in attendance, adding that she doesn’t plan to distribute her jokes to even those she agrees with.

“So U.S. presidents traditionally attend this dinner. However, Donald Trump never went to it during his first term in office. Do you want him to be there this year?” Tapper asked Ruffin.

“No. Don’t anybody want to know — No one wants that. Sure, it’s something to do. But, I can’t imagine he would. I can’t imagine he would. He should. He’s missing out on one of the cool things about being the President of the United States. But I don’t know that anyone’s looking forward to being in the same room as him,” Ruffin explained.

Leavitt called Ruffin “certainly an interesting choice” after the Daily Caller asked what the White House’s reaction was to the entertainment pick. Ruffin previously described Trump as a “toddler with his pants pulled down.”

Tapper later asked Ruffin if any of the past hosts of the dinner have given her any advice for how to handle the night.

“They also said that you have to make fun of everybody. You can’t just make fun of the people you disagree with, you have to spread it out evenly. And I am not going to do that,” Ruffin said as she laughed. “Maybe I will do it a little bit, probably not.”

WHCA President and Politico reporter Eugene Daniels named Ruffin as the entertainer on Tuesday, saying in a statement that the comedian was at the top of his list as to who to choose for the event.

“Amber’s unique talents are the ideal fit for this current political and cultural climate,” Daniels said. “Her perspective will fit right in with the dinner’s tradition of honoring the freedom of the press while roasting the most powerful people on all sides of the aisle and the journalists who cover them.”

“This dinner is about centering the importance of a functioning democracy and Amber is the type of entertainer who understands both the significance of that mission as well as the mechanics of power in this country,” he continued.

Ruffin added in the interview that she plans to approach the night by “telling the truth” about how she feels.

“I think I’m going to do it the same way I always do it, by just telling the truth about how I feel,” Ruffin said. “I feel like we all feel a little sad. Well, some of us feel pretty happy. But a lot of us feel a little sad. And I think it’s OK to say exactly what it is that’s making us feel this way.”

“And I think when you do that, and people feel the same way as you, they think that it is fun and funny and it feels good to hear, and that’s kind of where I operate from,” Ruffin continued.
