Comedian and podcaster Theo Von voiced support for President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff policy during a recent interview, highlighting the long-term strategy as a potential turning point for struggling American communities.

Von, who has been touring extensively across the United States, described his firsthand experience visiting hundreds of cities, many of which he said have become hollowed out by years of economic decline and outsourcing.

“The goal of tariffs is, if it costs more for people to bring their products in then they will build them here,” Von said.

“So it’s kind of a long-term play. It’s going to take a while.”

Von framed his support as a last-ditch effort to revive domestic industry and restore jobs to regions that have experienced decades of manufacturing flight.

“If we don’t try this, then I think it’s a wrap,” he said.

“On this comedy tour, we’ve been to probably the top 200 cities, like size-wise in America. Maybe even more than that. And a lot of them, there’s nothing there. It’s empty downtowns. It’s boarded up. And so you start to be like, nothing’s going to change. There’s nothing coming that’s going to make that better.”

President Trump has made reviving American industry and reducing reliance on China central to his economic platform.

His administration’s tariff policy aims to make it more expensive for foreign competitors to sell goods in the United States, thereby encouraging companies to produce goods domestically.

The broader strategy includes an effort to re-shore supply chains and critical manufacturing infrastructure.

According to the White House, over 100 countries have already opened negotiations with the U.S. on trade under the new framework.

On Sunday, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett confirmed that the administration is currently in talks with 130 nations regarding trade policy.

Speaking with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Hassett said the U.S. is using its trade leverage to push for stronger domestic production and fairer terms with international partners.

The Trump administration has repeatedly emphasized the economic and national security risks of depending on foreign supply chains, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, technology, and infrastructure materials.

Polling data also indicates broad public backing for the shift toward American-made goods.

Recent surveys show that nearly 80 percent of Americans favor manufacturing products within the United States, regardless of political affiliation.

While some analysts have raised concerns about potential short-term costs, Trump officials argue that the long-term benefits—such as job creation, economic independence, and strategic resilience—justify the approach.

The renewed focus on tariffs and domestic production marks a significant shift in U.S. economic policy, with Trump aiming to realign the nation’s trade relationships in a way that benefits American workers and restores growth to regions left behind by globalization.

Von’s comments come as voices from outside the political sphere, including those in entertainment and media, begin to weigh in on the administration’s approach to reviving the industrial backbone of the country.
