Congress Taking Steps to Put District Court Judges Back in Their Place [WATCH]

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is calling out what he describes as the unchecked power of district court judges issuing nationwide rulings, warning that some have acted beyond their constitutional authority.

In a recent statement, Gingrich said Congress is taking action to restore judicial boundaries, and he praised legislation introduced by House and Senate Republicans aimed at curbing the reach of lower courts.

Gingrich addressed the issue in response to a citizen question about why Congress hasn’t done more to confront what many see as activist rulings from the bench.

“There’s a great question from incognito who asked why Congress isn’t doing more to deal with these district judges who seem so out of control,” Gingrich said.

“I can talk about that because I actually testified at a judiciary committee hearing in the house just about a week ago talking about the need to restrict district courts to local district decisions and not allow district court judges to make nationwide decisions that could affect everybody, as though they were an alternative president.”

He pointed to recent legislative action in the House, spearheaded by Congressman Darrell Issa, which aims to end the use of nationwide injunctions by individual district judges.

The legislation would limit rulings to the district in which the judge serves, thereby preventing a single judge from halting federal actions nationwide.

“I’m delighted to report that Congressman Darrell Issa actually passed a bill which would block district courts from having nationwide injunctions and instead limit them to their own district. It went through the House,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich also noted that a companion bill is currently in the Senate, backed by Senator Chuck Grassley.

He expressed confidence that the measure will move forward.

“Senator Grassley has a similar bill in the Senate. I suspect it will pass, and I suspect that President Trump will sign it,” he said.

The move is part of a broader effort among conservatives to restore what they view as proper constitutional limits on the judiciary.

Nationwide injunctions, which have been used in recent years to block Trump administration policies on immigration, energy, and federal agency actions, have drawn sharp criticism from Republican lawmakers and legal scholars alike.

Gingrich characterized the issue as a matter of restoring balance between the branches of government and ensuring that judges remain within their defined jurisdiction.

“So Congress is moving to put district judges back in their district and not allow them to pretend that they’re alternative presidents,” he said.
