Sexual revolution. Crossdressing. Prostitution. Gay advocates. Transgender advocates. Abortion advocates. Down with big business! Down with the bourgeois! Hollow youth. A people turned against themselves.
Such was the state of Germany between 1918 and 1933. During those fifteen years between the end of the first World War and the beginning of the Third Reich, Germany was occupied by the Weimar Republic.
Luigi Barzini, then a young Italian journalist, describes his impressions of Weimar Berlin towards the end of this period.
Barzini writes of “disarray, civil strife, moral decay, violence, inflation, misery, unemployment, and hunger.”
“There were men dressed as women, women dressed as men or little school- girls, women in boots with whips … I saw legless veterans on crutches … armless or blind veterans wearing iron crosses, and the hungry unshaven unemployed, all of them begging. I saw pimps offering anything to anybody, little boys, little girls, robust young men, libidinous women, or (I suppose) animals.”
Repeat observation: “affirmation surgeries” were first attempted in Weimar Germany. Coincided w/degradation in traditional moral standards, and series of financial catastrophes. Political events in 1933 resulted in shuttering of all gender clinics. Make of that what you will.

Barzini recounts a popular anecdote in the city.
“The story went around that a male goose of which one cut the neck at the ecstatic moment would give you the most delicious, economical, and time-saving frisson of all … it allowed you to enjoy sodomy, bestiality, homosexuality, necrophilia, and sadism at one stroke.” (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Notorious Org’s Members Tried Pushing ‘Developmentally Delayed’ Young Adult Into Sex-Change Operation)
He continues.
“Gastronomy, too, as one could eat the goose afterward.”
When Barzini returned to Berlin in 1934, the streets were clean, the trees well-manicured. He witnessed “a new set of people … stiff men in spotless uniforms, honorables families … shopping housewives and supercilious chic women.”
“It was definitely and bewilderingly a new country.”
The United States is definitely and bewilderingly a new country. Find the beginning of our empire in the “progressive” movement.
Progress does not necessitate improvement. Only direction. Former President Franklin Roosevelt barreled the country down a path of tyrannical bureaucracy, withering the separation of powers. Roosevelt established an impenetrable administrative apparatus. These enlightened administrators were essential if government was to burrow into every nook and cranny of American life. A president, or a senator, can only spin so many plates. A legion of “experts” make better busybodies.
The tastes of our current experts run to “deranged.” They have for decades. (RELATED: ‘Boob Jobs,’ ‘Filler,’ ‘Botox’: Democrat Makes Absurd Case For Transgender Ideology)

Leftism displaced Christianity as early as the 1950s, as William F. Buckley chronicled in “God and Man at Yale.” Whatever malaise Buckley witnessed fomented into revolution by the 1960s.
Leftists fought — and won — a cultural revolution. Music, movies, magazines, drugs, “free love.” The revolution kept on churning. Same sex marriage, cannabis legalization, criminal justice reform. Plunging birth rates. A second, and third, and fourteenth chance for a career criminal. Mastectomies for little girls.
Such cultural victories were legitimized through the institutions. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 denied Americans their freedom of association. One can draw a direct line from that act to the disastrous “disparate impact” policies which have handicapped America. Universities, hospitals, and non-government organizations were staffed by true believers. So were the newspapers. And the research labs. Good luck getting a grant without a diversity statement.
By 2020, the capture was total.
Merely asking, “What is a woman?” was (and remains) grounds for expulsion from the left.
But a house quickly built is quickly washed away. Quiet disapproval was rising even as the left grew in apparent power.
Net approval of gay marriage was on the rise (slight dips notwithstanding) for Democrats, Republicans, and Independents between 1988 and the mid-2010s, according to Gallup. Republican approval starts to fall in 2018 — a few years after Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. It rises again, then declines from 55% in 2022 to 46% in 2024.
Obergefell v. Hodges was an inflection point. Same-sex marriage in hand, the 2SLGBTQIAA+s among us could move on to other agenda items. “Preferred pronouns.” Irreversible surgeries and hormone experiments on minors. Men in women’s sports, and locker rooms, and prisons. Your tax dollars funding those male prisoners’ boob jobs.

The left demands not just tolerance, but praise for their dysfunction.
Moral acceptance of gay and lesbian relations fell from 56% in 2022 to 40% in 2024, according to Gallup. Gen Z’s support for same-sex marriage fell 11% between 2021 and 2023, according to a poll from the Survey Center on American Life. The same poll found 28% of white Gen Z men identify as feminists, as compared to 34% of white millennial men. (RELATED: Gen Z’s Support For Gay Marriage Has Dropped Dramatically: POLL)
Support for cannabis legalization, too, skyrocketed among all voters, most notably Republicans, between 2000 and 2018. About 32% of Democrats supported the legalization of marijuana in 2000, according to a Gallup poll. About 53% of Republicans supported the legalization of marijuana in 2018. Democrat support climbed to 75% that year.
More recent polls indicate support for marijuana legislation remains high among Republicans. But their perception of marijuana’s effect have worsened. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike all viewed marijuana’s effect less positively in 2024 than they did in 2022.
Standing downwind of that policy was enough to turn off Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
It stinks to high heaven. Mayor Eric Adams is burning Albany for marijuana legalization bringing the sticky-icky smell of weed “everywhere” in New York City, he said on “Pod Force One” with @mirandadevine. Subscribe here: https://t.co/EhErjCYt1W pic.twitter.com/1oj9PwwE6B

“I think it should be relegated to certain areas that you could smoke marijuana, not throughout the entire street, because you do smell it everywhere,” Adams told the New York Post’s Pod Force One in July. “I think that’s one of the negative impacts of our cannabis law that the state government passed.”
Anti-racism was the left’s biggest win. Being labelled a racist — a label which might be provoked by literally looking at a non-white person without sufficient deference — was enough to get you fired, expelled, and socially exiled. Whites took great pains to avoid the label, not just for fear of social fallout, but for genuine belief in racial equality.
The left lost the public’s ear sometime after they burned down cities in George Floyd’s honor.
“Whiteness is great. Be proud of who you are,” Charlie Kirk wrote in 2023. Such innocuous contentions were verboten for decades. “Black Pride” and “Mexican Pride” and “Asian Pride” were all above board, of course. The phrase, “It’s okay to be white,” still appears on the Anti-Defamation League’s list of “Hate Slogans.” (RELATED: Catholic College Freaks Out Over ‘It’s Okay To Be White’ Signs)
These examples are admittedly tepid “victories” for the right. Many Republicans still refuse to challenge the moral framework laid by the left centuries ago. Their pitch to the American people goes something like, “Make America The Way It Was Ten Years Ago Again.”
Try rolling back the clock a few more years.
Like their predecessors in Weimar Germany, the American left has sprinted towards the finish line without regard to growing public contempt. Accusations of racism, bigotry, and homophobia have all but lost their rhetorical power.
Tolerance for the left’s demands is at an all-time low following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Those gleefully championing his murder do not appear aware of the bewildering future they are courting.
