Two Virginia Beach police officers were shot and killed during a late-night traffic stop on Friday, marking the first fatal shooting of a city officer in 16 years.
The officers, identified as Cameron Girvin, 25, and Christopher Reese, 30, were conducting a routine stop when the suspect opened fire, authorities confirmed Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the Green Run neighborhood after the officers pulled over a vehicle with an expired license plate.

According to body-worn camera footage reviewed by officials, the driver, identified as 42-year-old John McCoy III, was argumentative and uncooperative.
At the request of the officers, McCoy stepped out of the vehicle, but a struggle quickly ensued.
“Almost immediately, there was a tussle between the officers and this individual,” Police Chief Paul Neudigate said, according to WTVR.
During the altercation, McCoy allegedly pulled a pistol from his pocket and fired at both officers.
“Those officers fell to the ground. While on the ground, defenseless, he shot them each a separate time,” Neudigate said.
“What I can tell you from the video is after he executed our officers, he calmly walked away.”
Officer Reese was pronounced dead just past midnight at the hospital, surrounded by fellow officers, friends, and family. Officer Girvin succumbed to his injuries at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Law enforcement launched an immediate search for McCoy, who was later found dead in a nearby shed. Authorities believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“At no time did any of our officers fire shots,” Neudigate confirmed.
The tragic event marks the first shooting death of a Virginia Beach police officer since 2008.
The loss of the two officers has deeply impacted the Virginia Beach Police Department.
“I’m going to be quite honest, we’re all hurting,” Chief Neudigate said. “We’ve got an officer that is 25 years old, another one that is 30, with such a future ahead of them … senselessly taken.”
Officer Reese joined the force in 2020, and Girvin began his service in 2021. Girvin’s wife, Jessica, who is expecting their first child in August, shared an emotional tribute on Facebook.
“I’m not supposed to have to write this. I’m supposed to be posting about baby showers, the newest phase of our lives as parents and making a birthday post for him in a week,” she wrote.
The Virginia Beach Police Benevolent Association also expressed their grief.
“Two men lost their lives. Two families lost loved ones. A city and a nation lost heroes. Countless people lost a friend. The VBPD and PBA lost brothers,” the organization posted.
Congresswoman Jen Kiggans, whose district includes Virginia Beach, also released a statement on X, saying, “Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of two heroic Virginia Beach police officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty last night.”
