CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American soccer, announced on Wednesday that several Uruguayan national team players have been handed suspensions following a confrontation during the Copa América semi-final against Colombia in July.

The match, held at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, ended in a 1-0 defeat for Uruguay, but the aftermath led to significant disciplinary actions, as reported by Fox News.

Among the suspended players is Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez, who will be sidelined for five of Uruguay’s upcoming fixtures. Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-match ban, while Mathías Olivera, Ronald Araújo, and José Maria Giménez will each miss three games.

Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifying schedule includes a home match against Paraguay on September 6 and an away game against Venezuela four days later. Núñez’s suspension will also keep him out of the October matches against Peru and Ecuador, as well as the home game against Colombia in November.

The suspensions stem from a post-match brawl that erupted between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans. The altercation took place immediately following Uruguay’s 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Copa América semi-final.

As the final whistle blew at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, tensions that had been simmering throughout the match boiled over. Frustration among the Uruguayan players, exacerbated by taunts and provocations from Colombian supporters, quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.

Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez, along with Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur, and fellow teammates Mathías Olivera, Ronald Araújo, and José Maria Giménez, became entangled in the chaos.

The situation spiraled as the players, already on edge from the defeat, reacted to what they perceived as aggressive behavior from the fans. The resulting melee drew attention from security personnel and officials, but the damage was done.

This incident, caught on camera and widely circulated on social media, prompted CONMEBOL to take swift disciplinary action, leading to the suspensions and fines now imposed on the players involved.

In addition to the suspensions, financial penalties have been imposed. Núñez faces a $20,000 fine, Bentancur $16,000, and Olivera, Araújo, and Giménez $12,000 each. Seven other Uruguayan players who were involved in the incident have been fined $5,000 apiece.

Giménez later explained to the media that the players were attempting to protect their families from the aggressive behavior of Colombian supporters, which led to the escalation of the situation.
