Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) made headlines on Monday night into Tuesday morning after delivering what Democrats and their media allies have described as a “marathon speech” on the Senate floor.

The speech, which lasted for hours, was intermittently supported by fellow senators who joined Booker in a bid to keep the speech going.

Early Tuesday evening, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Senate Minority Leader, informed Booker that he had officially broken the record for the longest speech in Senate history.

Booker, who was aware of the historical significance of his action, acknowledged the record-breaking moment.

“I was very aware of Strom Thurmond’s record,” Booker explained.

“Since I’ve gotten to the Senate, I always felt that it was a strange shadow hang over this institution, that the longest speech. All the issues have come up on noble causes that people have done, or the things it took to try to stop. I just found it strange that he had the record. And as a guy who grew up with the legends of the civil rights movement, myself, my parents, and other their friends, it just seemed wrong.”

While Booker’s speech was a notable feat of endurance, it was not technically a filibuster.

He did not block any of President Trump’s nominees or any proposed legislation.

This distinction was emphasized by Republican strategist Scott Jennings during a CNN segment, where he questioned the purpose of Booker’s speech, given that it had no direct legislative impact.

Jennings remarked, “It is a feat of longevity. I’m not sure what the point of it is. He didn’t stop any legislation. He didn’t hold up any nominations. He said it was a moral moment. So I guess, you know, as a Republican, I infer that he thinks half the country is immoral.”

Jennings also pointed to the broader context of the speech, which he suggested may have been an attempt by Booker to fill a leadership void within the Democratic Party.

“There’s no real leadership nationally in the Democratic Party,” Jennings said.

“Obviously, they don’t have any confidence in Schumer. They’ve had a lot of radical voices out there who are trying to take control of the party. So maybe this was an attempt by him to try to wrest control of at least the spiritual leadership of the national party.”

Booker’s speech was described by many as performative and self-serving, with little substance in terms of legislative progress.

Despite this, it provided him with significant national attention and, in the eyes of some, could be seen as laying the groundwork for a potential future presidential bid.

The speech, while not accomplishing much in terms of changing the course of legislation, managed to place Booker in the spotlight, offering him an opportunity to increase his visibility on the national stage.

In the aftermath of the speech, the question remains whether the effort will have any lasting impact on the Democratic Party’s standing with voters.

With Congressional Democrats holding a 21% approval rating, according to Harry Enten, there is widespread recognition that the party is struggling to find its footing.

Some speculate that Booker’s lengthy speech was an attempt to position himself as a key figure in the party, especially as Democrats look for new leadership in the wake of their recent electoral setbacks.

As the dust settles from Booker’s record-breaking speech, many are left questioning whether his performance will be remembered as a symbolic moment of personal achievement or a futile gesture that did little to address the real challenges facing the nation and the Democratic Party.

So… let’s get this straight.

Cory Booker wasn’t filibustering for a vote. There wasn’t a pressing issue on the floor. There wasn’t anything on the agenda.

Regardless, Booker has once again found himself at the center of attention, whether for the right reasons or not.
