Conservative commentator Benny Johnson and California political figure Carl DeMaio discussed the potential political impact of voter ID laws in California, with both suggesting the state could shift politically if election rules change.

Johnson raised the prospect of California becoming more competitive, asking, “What is your message to Gavin Newsom, he’s obviously going to fight you tooth and nail here, because this is going to mean less power for him.”

He added, “This is going to mean, I think, that like California instead, becomes more of like a purple state, which is probably where it rightly sits if it were, if everything were done sort of fair and equal and same, same.”

Johnson continued, “California just kind of be like a swing state, right eventually.”

DeMaio responded by focusing on what he described as failures within the California Republican Party.

“I had to hold the Republican Party of California accountable for its ineptitude and its lack of courage, lack of principles,” he said.

He added, “They’ve sold us out for 20 years. They haven’t organized the fight.”

He specifically criticized party leadership, stating, “Let me just say this right now on your on your show the party chair Corrin Rankin, not only is she inept and incompetent, but she actually undermined our voter ID initiative.”

DeMaio said, “They didn’t lift a finger. The California Republican Party did not lift a finger to help us with voter ID.”

According to DeMaio, the voter ID push has been driven by grassroots efforts rather than party leadership.

“This was a grassroots rebellion,” he said.

He added, “This was done despite their their their efforts to undermine our process.”

DeMaio argued that political imbalance in California is tied to differences in organization between the parties.

“California’s so blue because Democrats are working it and hustling, and the Republicans have literally sold us out,” he said.

He expressed confidence that voter ID efforts could lead to broader political change.

“I do believe we will become more purple, as you’ve just predicted with voter ID,” DeMaio said.

He added that the shift would be driven by increased engagement.

“It’s because we’re showing people that there is the ability to fight.”

DeMaio said he has encountered voters who are frustrated but not ready to leave the state.

“I’m meeting so many people who say, I don’t want to flee California. I love California, but I hate our government,” he said.

He continued, “When people see others fighting, not only does it give them hope, but they will join that fight.”

He predicted the state could eventually move further politically.

“I predict red, again,” DeMaio said, attributing that to growing participation.

“We’re giving people hope and giving them something that they can be part of.”

DeMaio also warned that Gov. Gavin Newsom would strongly oppose such efforts.

“I do think Gavin Newsom is going to try to lie and cheat and deceive and break the law on this,” he said.

He added, “He’s going to ignore the law, particularly as he’s running for president.”

He cautioned against dismissing Newsom as a political figure.

“I warn people across the country, do not underestimate him,” DeMaio said.

He acknowledged criticism of Newsom’s record but emphasized his political abilities.

“Oh, he’s a lousy governor. He’s failed his way upward with the help of billionaires,” he said.

DeMaio argued that Newsom’s communication skills make him a formidable opponent.

“But the one thing he is very good at is he’s a very capable liar,” he said. He added, “He is dangerous, and you, you underestimate him.”

He concluded by warning of the broader stakes if Newsom were to pursue higher office.

“I believe right now, as people dismiss him, he is very capable of winning the White House,” DeMaio said.

He added, “We’ve got to make sure people learn the truth about his character flaws and his failures here in California.”
