Democrats have turned to social media theatrics in response to President Donald Trump’s recent Joint Address to Congress, with several high-profile members attempting to cast themselves as symbols of “resistance.”
However, their efforts have been met with criticism, particularly as the majority of Americans responded positively to Trump’s speech.
Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) posted an image online following the speech, attempting to project defiance after he and several other Democrats walked out.
We just walked out of the state of the Union. My shirt showed Trump an important message: NO KINGS LIVE HERE.

However, the intended message fell flat when he failed to fully showcase the shirts worn by the protesting lawmakers, leaving the stunt without clear messaging.

Adding to the social media push, a video labeled “Choose Your Fighter” surfaced, featuring several Democrat representatives, including House Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
The video attempted to cast the lawmakers as champions of their cause, but the effort was quickly countered by a statement from the White House.
“The American people have already chosen their fighters: Trump and the Trump team,” the administration responded.

One of the most striking responses came from Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), who criticized Trump’s address, calling it “vengeful, revengeful” and claiming it failed to address the cost of living.
“Instead of lifting the hopes and aspirations, it devolved into vindictiveness and self-adulation of Donald Trump,” DeLauro stated.
Her remarks contrasted sharply with public reaction to the speech. Polling showed that 76% of viewers approved of Trump’s address, with many describing it as “inspiring” and “unifying.”
Viewers also reported feeling “hopeful” and “proud” following the president’s remarks.

Despite DeLauro’s claims that Trump ignored economic issues, many Americans recall that the economy struggled under the Biden-Harris administration.
With inflation, rising costs, and economic uncertainty dominating the past four years, Trump’s return to office has shifted the focus toward addressing those concerns.
Democrats’ social media-driven responses to Trump’s address have further highlighted their internal disarray.
In addition to DeLauro’s remarks and the “Choose Your Fighter” video, several other party members have attempted to use social media trends to appeal to younger audiences.
DeLauro herself previously posted a widely criticized video in September, which was aimed at engaging Gen Z but was instead labeled “cringe” by many viewers.

With Trump’s administration now focused on rolling back Biden-era policies and restoring economic stability, Democrats appear to be struggling to find an effective strategy to counter his agenda.
Their reliance on performative protests and social media stunts has drawn criticism from both sides, raising questions about their leadership and direction heading into future elections.
Trump’s address was widely viewed as a pivotal moment in setting the tone for his administration’s priorities, while Democrats’ response has underscored the divide between their political messaging and the concerns of the American people.
