Costa, the former prime minister of Portugal and current head of the European Council since 2024, handed the autographed shirt to President Trump, who accepted it with visible appreciation.
The red Portugal jersey features Ronaldo’s iconic No. 7 and includes a personal message to the president.
Costa read the message aloud during the exchange: “To President Donald J. Trump, Playing for Peace.” Trump, 79, responded while holding the jersey in both hands, saying, “I like it, playing for peace.”

Ronaldo, 40, remains one of the most recognized figures in global sports. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner currently plays as a forward for Saudi club Al Nassr and continues to captain Portugal’s national team. He holds the record for the most goals scored in international men’s football, with 138 goals to date.
Ronaldo recently led Portugal to a UEFA Nations League title and is expected to continue playing at the international level through the next FIFA World Cup, which will take place in 2026 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The jersey presentation came during bilateral discussions between Trump and Costa on the sidelines of the G7 meetings. The leaders reportedly discussed transatlantic cooperation, NATO defense spending, and economic issues within the European Union.
The symbolic gift adds to a growing list of international gestures recognizing President Trump’s global influence. It also highlights the ongoing diplomatic ties between the United States and Portugal.
No formal statement was issued by the White House regarding the exchange, but photos of the moment circulated among attending delegations.
The Ronaldo jersey, personalized with a message of peace, is expected to be added to the collection of gifts received by the President during international visits.
