Cuba Remains in the Dark, Trump Says a Deal is Coming

Yesterday there was some kind of major fault at the largest power station on the island, putting at least two-thirds of the country into darkness. Today, reports indicate the power is still off for about half the island and the best indications are that it could be several more days before repairs are completed.

A blackout left millions of people without power in Havana and the rest of western Cuba on Wednesday in the latest outage on an island struggling with dwindling oil reserves and a crumbling electric grid.

Government radio station Radio Rebelde quoted an energy official as saying that it could take at least 72 hours to restore operations at one of Cuba’s largest thermoelectric power plants, where a shutdown sparked the outage…

Radio Rebelde quoted the plant’s technical director Román Pérez Castañeda as saying that crews must first locate the fault before repairing it and restarting the unit.

Pérez Castañeda said that a pipe burst in the boiler, causing a water leak and subsequent fire that was extinguished without major damage, according to Radio Rebelde.

It sort of sounds like they haven’t even found the problem yet, which is why it could take another three days to get the power back online. Today, Trump repeated his earlier suggestion that Cuba is a failed state and said that Cuba wanted US help.

That was earlier today. This afternoon, Trump met with Inter Miami CF, the 2025 major league soccer champions, at the White House. Once again, Cuba came up.

His comment about a couple of weeks was apparently about waiting until the current military action in Iran is finished. He said it might be possible to do two things at once but suggested the results of rushing a deal might not be as good.

This is all a bit disjointed but the gist is that Trump thinks a deal with Cuba is imminent and will happen just as soon as he’s done dealing with Iran. That deal will certainly involve new leadership and a new direction for Cuba’s economy.

I hope he’s right about all of this obviously. There’s always a lot that can go wrong. But as Bill Maher said a few weeks ago, if Trump can pull this off he deserves that Nobel prize.
