Cubans Protest Outside US Embassy

As you probably know already, Cuba’s economy was in bad shape even before the US raid on Venezuela cut them off from the #2 supplier of oil. Now the economy is on the verge of a collapse which could plunge the entire country into darkness.

Yesterday, the Trump administration announced a plan to distribute aid to Cuba but that aid will not be going through the government. Instead, it will be funneled through Catholic churches in the country.

The announcement was made during a press availability organized by the U.S. Department of State’s South Florida hub and moderated Wednesday afternoon from Weston, Florida, as planes and ships carrying U.S. aid prepare to head to Cuba following Hurricane Melissa and amid deepening poverty on the island…

The U.S. does not want this aid to end up in the hands of the Cuban regime, and officials said there will be consequences if it does interfere.

So, the U.S. found another way through the church and more than 1,000 pastors across Cuba, many of whom already work directly with local communities.

The warning to Cuba’s government not to interfere with the relief was pretty blunt. Under Secretary of State Jeremy Lewin said the US would be watching.

“We will be watching,” he said. “If they do that, then they’ll be accountable to their own people who are suffering, and they’ll be accountable to us. As (Secretary of State Marco Rubio) said after the tremendously successful operation to capture the narco terrorist (Nicolas) Maduro and his wife, ‘don’t play games with this president’.”

Today, the Cuban government has organized protests against the US outside our embassy in Havana.

Tens of thousands of Cubans demonstrated Friday outside the U.S. Embassy in Havana to decry the killing of 32 Cuban officers in Venezuela and demand that the U.S. government release former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

They crowded into the open-air “José Martí Anti-Imperialist” plaza across from the embassy in a rally organized by the Cuban government as tensions between Cuba and the U.S. spike following the U.S. attack Jan. 3 on Venezuela…

“Humanity is experiencing something very complex, and (the US) is governed by a president who considers himself an emperor,” said René González, 64, one of the protesters.

I always enjoy it when communist goons living in a one-party state like Cuba or China lecture me on democracy. Cuba hasn’t had a free election since 1958.

Their current president promises that will continue.

“Cuba does not have to make any political concessions, and that will never be on the table for negotiations aimed at reaching an understanding between Cuba and the United States,” Díaz-Canel said. “It is important that they understand this. We will always be open to dialogue and improving relations between our two countries, but only on equal terms and based on mutual respect.”

There should be no mutual respect with Cuba. They are a communist dictatorship and the Cuban people will be better off once Castro’s anti-democratic revolution has failed once and for all. Finally, there are nearly 9 million people in Cuba. This government sponsored march had fewer than 10,000 people.
